Search Ranking Factors Shows How Little SEO Has Changed
Search Ranking Factors Shows How Little SEO Has Changed
Aug 24, 2009 at 1:37pm ET by Matt McGee
72 search engine optimizers from around the world have contributed to SEOmoz’s latest Search Engine Ranking Factors report, a study that offers valuable insight into how SEO works in 2009 … but also shows how little it’s changed in recent years. (Disclaimer: I’m one of the 72 contributors.) You can read the survey here, Surveyand there are also some interesting comments on SEOmoz’s blog post.
Participating SEOs completed a lengthy survey earlier this year that involved ranking possible factors that Google uses when ranking sites. The survey also included a variety of questions about current SEO trends and topics.
According to this year’s survey, the top five ranking factors are:
1.Anchor Text from External Links
2.Keyword Use in Title Tag
3.Raw Link Popularity
4.Diversity of Linking Domains
5.Keyword Use in Root Domain
Those first three factors are unchanged from the 2007 version of this survey, although the order is slightly different. Two years ago, the top five were:
1.Keyword Use in Title Tag
2.Global Link Popularity of Site (”Raw Link Popularity” above)
3.Anchor Text of Inbound Links (”Anchor Text from External Links” above)
4.Link Popularity within the Site’s Internal Link Structure
5.Age of Site
It looks like SEOmoz changed the structure of this year’s survey a bit. Negative ranking factors are presented separately, and there’s a new chart of “Overall Ranking Algorithm” elements. In fact, the fifth factor on the 2007 list, “Age of Site,” is now essentially the same as (or at least very similar to) the number one piece of the Overall Ranking Algorithm, “Trust/Authority of the Host Domain.”
When it comes to the big picture of SEO, the primary factors really haven’t changed much over the years. But what separates “good” SEO from “great” SEO is often in the details. That’s where you’ll find the true value of the SEO factors survey — in learning the little things that competitors may have overlooked.

Westmoreland Glass Company, Part 2 of 2
Westmoreland Glass Company, Continued
Other Westmoreland Wares
Westmoreland is clearly best known for its milk glass, with 90 percent of the glass produced from the 1920s through the 1950s having the milky white hue. However, in the 1920's the company did make limited selections of high quality decorated glass and crystal, including hen on nest dishes made in a variety of colors in addition to milk glass. Even into the 1950s, limited amounts of amber, blue, green, pink and brown glass left the Westmoreland factory.
Westmoreland’s Later Years
In 1981 ownership of Westmoreland was purchased by Dave Grossman, according to the National Westmoreland Glass Collectors Club. On May 21, 1984, the Westmoreland Glass Company closed its doors just a few years shy of its 100 year anniversary.
The Westmoreland molds were sold to a number of other glass manufacturers including Summit Art Glass, Viking Glass, Blenko and a number of others. Some of the molds are still being utilized today in glass manufacture. For a more comprehensive list of companies that purchased Westmoreland molds, refer to the Newbound’s milk glass identification and value guide.

Rubik's Cube
The Rubik's Cube is a 3-D mechanical puzzle invented in 1974by Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture Ernő Rubik. Originally called the "Magic Cube", the puzzle was licensed by Rubik to be sold by Ideal Toys in 1980and won the German Game of the Year special award for Best Puzzle that year. As of January 2009, 350 million cubes have sold worldwide making it the world's top-selling puzzle game. It is widely considered to be the world's best-selling toy.
In a classic Rubik's Cube, each of the six faces is covered by 9 stickers, among six solid colours (traditionally white, red, blue, orange, green, and yellow). A pivot mechanism enables each face to turn independently, thus mixing up the colours. For the puzzle to be solved, each face must be a solid colour. Similar puzzles have now been produced with various numbers of stickers, not all of them by Rubik. The original 3×3×3 version celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2005.

Reading AuctionBytes: From the Editor
In a recent article, Stores magazine wrote that shoppers are becoming agnostic about retail channels as loyalty takes a back seat to price. That thinking might help explain the increasing trend of squeezing more dollars out of excess inventory by all of the players - retailers, manufacturers, liquidators and online marketplaces - using a variety of approaches as described in the September 8th issue of Newsflash.
It might also help explain the blurring of lines in the ecommerce space. Offline retailers such as Wal-Mart and Sears are opening their online platforms to third-party sellers, and Walmart.com offers classifieds on its website.

The Day The Eagle Cried
There is a group of young soldiers doing a 24 hour walk around the National Mall, in remembrance of 9/11, starting at midnight on 9/10 and going on through until midnight 9/11. This is the second year that they are doing it, and they are inviting everyone to come and walk with them for as long as you can.
here is the link to their website:
