The 30 Free SEO Tools You Must Know

Recently a “101 free SEO Tools that don’t suck” list went popular on Sphinn. I love 101 items lists and I love free SEO tools especially if the tools “don’t suck”. While checking out the list I’ve encountered some tools I haven’t been using much or been familiar with at all. On the other hand I was missing some tools I use daily. When I noticed that the list actually contains SEO tools that measure the so called keyword density I finally decided to compile my own list.

Here I want to focus on those few free SEO tools you must know to be able to practice SEO in a meaningful way.

Using 101 tools for whatever purpose is not productive. At the end of the day you got to find your set of say 10 or 12 tools you’ll use. Everything else is just playing around and wasting your precious time. Thus this list will be the size of the usual SEOptimise list, approx. 30 items. I’ll concentrate on free SEO tools here as everybody can test them this way. Some of them are freemium that is they offer basic functionality for free and make you pay for the full fledged product.

YANKEE STADIUM MEMORABILIA

Parts of the old Yankee Stadium are being sold and will continue to be sold for about another year and a half. According to Forbes.com, Steiner Sports, which is handling the sale, will spend millions to remove the parts from the stadium undamaged. The first $11.5 million in sales goes to New York City. Most of the stadium's important items will be sold via competitive bidding, but you can still buy some grass from the field--freeze-dried in a display case--for a set price of $100. {A}turnstile....sold for $6,785.

DILLINGER PISTOL

Gangster John Dillinger carried a pistol in the 1930s when he was robbing banks. It sold at a Heritage auction in Los Angeles for $95,600, much more than expected and probably more than Dillinger ever got in a hold-up. Could part of the interest be because of the new movie "Public Enemies," in which Johnny Depp plays the part of Dillinger?

The famous Smith & Wesson original .357 Magnum Revolver was developed
primarily for use by law enforcement personnel. The first registered
Magnum was presented to the FBI's J. Edgar Hoover. In 1935,
at the height of the Great Depression, Smith & Wesson began production
of the .357, even though they feared they would have a lackluster
response to the pistol's introduction, because of the high
production cost which had to be passed on to buyers. The Magnum was
much more expensive than other pistols of its day. The economic
restraint of the Depression didn't help. For these reasons, their
original plans called for a limited production run.

The Alaska Territorial Guard in Action

In the winter of 1937, Gen. Malin Craig, U.S. Army Chief of Staff said, “…the mainland of Alaska is so remote from the strategic areas of the Pacific that it is difficult to conceive of circumstances in which air operations therefrom would contribute materially to the national defense.” This overall sentiment seemed to be the case in the early 1940’s when the National Guard was federalized shortly before the attack of Pearl Harbor. Alaska National Guard members were almost totally removed from the State of Alaska at the time of their activation.

This created a need for an armed territorial force in the summer of 1942 when the Japanese bombed Dutch Harbor, Alaska. Territorial Governor, Ernest Gruening, commissioned the creation of the Alaska Territorial Guard that same year. He asked Major Marvin R. Marston and Captain Carl Schreibner to be his military aides.

Major Marston believed that the Alaska Territory was some of the most important territory America controlled at the time. Major Marston is quoted as saying, “The nation’s whose air bases are nearest the North Pole will be feared most and have the least to fear.”

Over the course of the Major’s four-plus years of service in Alaska, he became known as “Angaiyokak”, or “boss”, to the Eskimos. Ernest Gruening referred to Major Marston as “The Arctic Lawrence”, likening his level of respect from the Eskimo people, and the Major’s level respect for the Eskimo people to that of Lawrence of Arabia.

Recruiting began in earnest in 1942 and continued into 1943. By this time, Japanese troops controlled Attu and Kiska islands in the Aleutian Island chain off the coast of Alaska. These islands were part of the territory claimed by America and became significant in World War II history in that Attu and Kiska were the only U.S. lands occupied by a foreign force during the war.

The remaining American forces in the area, units of the Alaskan National Guard not moved elsewhere to fight, and the Alaska Territorial Guard, launched a massive attack of the island of Attu on May 11th, 1943. It only took them three weeks to repel the Japanese.

The primary invasion force of the Japanese retreated from Kiska on June 28th, 1943.

The Alaska Territorial Guard was under the command of the Alaska Defense Command and also assisted in moving equipment and supplies to the Russians during World War II.

Jobless Man on Welfare Finds Valuable Treasure

JOBLESS MAN ON WELFARE FINDS VALUABLE TREASURE

A jobless man on welfare found one of the most important treasures of the century, according to British archaeologists. Over 1,500 pieces of Anglo-Saxon gold and silver work from the seventh century were found in a farmer's field. (The Anglo-Saxons ruled England from the 400s to 1066, when the Normans invaded.)

The treasure hunter earned his luck by using a metal detector for 18 years before he made this discovery. The treasure included gold and silver sword fittings, crosses, dagger hilts, and parts of swords and helmets worth at least $1.6 million. The treasure belongs to the government, which will sell it to museums. The money will be shared; half to the farmer who owned the land, half to the finder.

Hunters with metal detectors and bottle diggers may damage historic sites, so they are scorned by archaeologists in the U.S.A. There are trespassing and other laws to prevent them from searching. Perhaps there should be a way to legalize what they do and to pay them for what they find so museums get the artifacts, finders get the money, and there is less damage and theft at sites that should be studied.

While we’re still digesting the news of Bing adding Twitter to its search engine, Google has some news of their own: they’re about to do the same exact thing.

The search giant has just announced that they have reached a deal with Twitter to include tweets in search results.

From the Google blog:

“Given this new type of information and its value to search, we are very excited to announce that we have reached an agreement with Twitter to include their updates in our search results. We believe that our search results and user experience will greatly benefit from the inclusion of this up-to-the-minute data, and we look forward to having a product that showcases how tweets can make search better in the coming months. That way, the next time you search for something that can be aided by a real-time observation, say, snow conditions at your favorite ski resort, you’ll find tweets from other users who are there and sharing the latest and greatest information.”
