THE PEACE BRIGADE VS THE STRYKER BRIGADE

The “Peace” Brigade vs. the Stryker Brigade
Posted: 07 Mar 2007 12:12 PM CST
By Michelle MalkinOriginally published at Townhall.com

Last week, I wrote about the Gathering of Eagles (www.gatheringofeagles.org) — veterans, active-duty troops, bikers, activists and ordinary citizens coming to Washington, D.C., on March 17 to hold a counter-protest against tens of thousands of anti-war extremists demanding immediate withdrawal of our troops from Iraq and Afghanistan.

In Washington state this week, the peace brigade held a dress rehearsal at the Port of Tacoma — where they showed support for our troops by taunting the Stryker Brigade and local police guarding against obstruction of the convoys headed to Iraq. More than 300 Stryker vehicles and other equipment are being moved from Fort Lewis to Iraq in support of the 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division’s upcoming deployment as part of the ongoing “surge” and counterinsurgency efforts. The Strykers are equipped with slat armor to protect the troops from rocket-propelled grenades.

Yes, the same ilk that purport to care so much about the troops not having enough armor and protection stood and jeered at those deploying to bring more protection to their fellow soldiers in Iraq.

Such patriots, aren’t they?

Members of the anti-military mob shouted condescendingly at our volunteer soldiers rolling past them: “Free the troops!” “No justice, no peace!” “You don’t have to go!” One lunatic with a bullhorn urged Stryker Brigade members to disobey their commanding officers and sneered: “Your sergeant is a douchebag!”

Such patriots, aren’t they?

These same bullies staged obstructionist protests at the Port of Olympia in Washington last year — blocking gates to prevent convoys from passing and attempting to tear down fencing following the arrival of a large military ship bound for Iraq. In April 2003, “peace” protesters waged similar attacks in Oakland, Calif., where they attempted to shut down a port involved in shipping military supplies to soldiers. The Bay Area anti-war brigade set out deliberately and specifically to prevent private businesses from fulfilling their federal contracts with the Department of Defense and U.S. Agency for International Development related to the war and post-war reconstruction in Iraq.

Such patriots, aren’t they?

DISGRACING THE MEMORIES OF AMERICAN HEROES

Disgracing the memories of American heroes

The most unseemly members of the anti-war contingent have showed us their colors by dishonoring and disgracing war memorials all across the continent. On Saturday, March 17, anti-war activists plan a giant march in protest of Operation Iraqi Freedom by gathering near the Vietnam Wall, and many veterans groups fear that the anti-American, anti-military ranks of ANSWER (who are organizing the anti-war event) might repeat their offensive behavior again.
You can understand why veterans groups are so nervous when you look at the recent rash of vandalism and desecration against our veterans and war memorials. In a late January anti-war rally, a contingent of protesters broke off and spray painted the U.S. Capitol building and steps with anti-war and anarchist messages and slogans. Anti-war protesters spray painted anti-Bush slogans and smashed glass panels at the Medal of Honor Monument in Indianapolis, Ind. In Boise, Idaho, the son of a Democratic state senator was accused of vandalizing flagpoles and desecrating flags at the State Capitol. The flags are memorials to soldiers who lost their lives in the war on terror. In Pennsylvania, someone attacked the South Connellsville War Memorial, destroying the lighting grid at the monument. Another war memorial was desecrated in Vermont. A Vietnam memorial was vandalized in Chicago. The list just goes on and on.

There's something that patriotic Americans – including YOU – can do to counter the negativity, defeatism and vandalism of the anti-war left. On Saturday, March 17, veterans groups, pro-troop organizations and patriotic Americans will conduct their own event: The Gathering of Eagles. This event has been organized by some of the most decent and honorable people such as Vietnam veterans Col. Harry Riley and Capt. Larry Bailey. It's time for those who support the men and women of the United States military to do something positive, uplifting and patriotic to send a message to our nation's leaders that we will not sit back and allow the missions of our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan to be undermined any further.

The nation's largest grass-roots pro-troop organization, Move America Forward (an organization for which I serve as chairman) will do its part by organizing a caravan of patriotic Americans to head across this nation. The caravan is called "These Colors Don't Run," and we will be conducting pro-troop rallies at our stops across the nation. At each stop we will ask participants to bring an American flag (or several American flags). We will then erect a giant sea of flags – a sort of "Flag City" if you will – on the Capitol Mall in Washington, D.C., during the "Gathering of Eagles" rally. We will then send each flag flown during this event to a serviceman or servicewoman who is stationed in Iraq or Afghanistan. With each flag will be a placard with a picture of the event and an explanation of how this event was conducted to show our troops that Americans still stand behind them and wish them success in their missions.

Please find the city closest to you that we will be traveling to, and find a way to join us. Team up with others in your area to form a "mini-caravan" that heads to one of our pro-troop rally stops and then merge with us as we continue on the trek to Washington, D.C. The caravan route map and schedule can be found online at the Move America Forward website. Parents who have a son or daughter serving in Iraq or Afghanistan, veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, as well as the parents of troops who were killed in either Iraq or Afghanistan will lead the caravan.

These people are some of the finest, most decent Americans you will ever meet. They want to meet as many people as possible at these rally stops across the nation. So please, do whatever you can to make this event a success. Get out to the rally locations, join the caravan (and decorate your car red, white and blue if possible), and be sure to bring a flag or multiple flags to our rally stops. We'll display them proudly in Washington, D.C., and then make sure they get sent over to the heroic men and women serving on the frontlines in the war on terrorism.

The anti-war crowd has shown their true colors. They dishonor and degrade all that is great about America, and this nation's standing as the bastion of freedom and liberty. Now it's time to show the rest of this nation and the world the "other" side of America – that which celebrates this nation and the men and women who defend us, and keep the torch of liberty alive shining brightly.

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA HAND GUN LAW OVERTURNED

WASHINGTON — A federal appeals court on Friday overturned the District of Columbia's longstanding handgun ban, issuing a decision that will allow the city's citizens to have working firearms in their homes.

In the ruling, the US District Court of Columbia rejected city officials' arguments that the Second Amendment right to bear arms only applied to state militias.
District of Columbia Mayor Adrian Fenty told reporters Friday afternoon that the District will appeal the ruling. In a 2-1 decision, the judges held that the activities protected by the Second Amendment "are not limited to militia service, nor is an individual's enjoyment of the right contingent upon his or her continued intermittent enrollment in the militia."
"This is a huge case," Alan Gura, the plaintiffs' lead lawyer, told FOXNews.com Friday afternoon. "It's simply about whether law-abiding citizens can maintain a functioning firearm, including a handgun, inside their house." Gura said his six clients, all Washington residents, challenged three separate District of Columbia laws: A 31-year-old law that prevents handgun registration; a law that requires rifles and shotguns to be either disassembled or disabled when being stored; and a law that requires a permit to carry a gun in your own home.

Gura said the law does not affect law that governs concealed carry permits outside the home.
"I don't see this going into effect immediately, but certainly, you know, when it does go into effect, our clients, as well as everyone in Washington, will be able to have a handgun and maintain their home without having a permit to move it around in their home," Gura said.

The case began five years ago. In 2004, a lower court judge lower-court judge said the plaintiffs did not have a constitutional right to own handguns. The plaintiffs include residents of high-crime neighborhoods who wanted the guns for protection. "The district's definition of the militia is just too narrow," Judge Laurence Silberman wrote for the majority on Friday. "There are too many instances of 'bear arms' indicating private use to conclude that the drafters intended only a military sense." Judge Karen Henderson dissented, writing that the Second Amendment does not apply to the district because it is not a state.
The Bush administration has endorsed individual gun-ownership rights, but the Supreme Court has never settled the issue. If the dispute makes it to the high court, it would be the first case in nearly 70 years to address the Second Amendment's scope. Fenty said the city government will exercise petition for a rehearing, which will be an "en banc" review to take place before all the court's judges instead of the three-judge panel that considered the case. Depending on the court's decision, the case can be appealed to the Supreme Court. "We intend to do everything in our power to work to get this decision overturned, and in the meantime, we will vigorously enforce our handgun law," Fenty said. He said the decision "flies in the face of laws that have helped decrease gun violence," noting that it was the first time a federal appeals court has struck down a gun law on the basis of the Second Amendment.

The Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, in its entirety, states: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." Gura predicted that the case, because of clear arguments, can now be used in other federal cases to support Second Amendment arguments that citizens have the "right to keep and bear arms." "This case will have significant impact beyond the District of Columbia," Gura said. He did not know if any other cases would be affected immediately by the decision.

Silberman wrote that the Second Amendment is still "subject to the same sort of reasonable restrictions that have been recognized as limiting, for instance, the First Amendment."
Such restrictions might include gun registration to provide the government with information about how many people would be armed if militia service was required, firearms testing to promote public safety or restrictions on gun ownership for criminals or those deemed mentally ill.

The decision is spurring action on Capitol Hill as well. Working with the National Rifle Association, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson, R-Texas, said she would reintroduce a piece of legislation aimed at keeping handguns legal in the District. The measure has previously passed in the House, but failed in the Senate. "Not only is Washington, D.C.'s gun ban unconstitutional, but it also has been a public policy failure as seen in the rise in crime since its enactment. The time has finally come to change course," Hutchison said, according to a news release.

AMATEUR RC VIDEO

An interesting video of a model B-29 and Bell X1 Rocket plane.
Certainly this was on expensive project both in money and time
spent. The “pilot” does a pretty good job but we’ve never heard
of a B-29 or any of its variants ever doing outside loops before.

http://users.skynet.be/fa926657/files/B29.wmv

And for my hamsters and Hamsterettes, 2 trivia questions. Amateur
radio operators are often involved with RC models as well.
In what amateur band do they have these somewhat exclusive privileges?
(This, by the way, gives the amateur radio RC flier a distinct safety
advantage in that it virtually eliminates frequency conflicts)
Also, since identification can’t be carried out as in normal amateur radio
practice what is the ID requirement here?

For the Wedgwood Collector

Here is a sample of Antique Wedgwood available at our online auction sites or from our website:

Wedgwood Jasperware Vase, circa 1960-80. Contact Penny's Pantry at cupenny@tds.net for details. This piece has not yet been listed. A great item for the serious Wedgwood collector. Price $225.00.

In 1754 Josiah Wedgwood began to experiment with coloured creamware. He established his own factory, but often worked with others who did transfer printing. He also produced jasperware, made of white stoneware clay that had been coloured by the addition of metal oxides. Jasperware was usually ornamented with white relief portraits or Greek Classical scenes. Jasperware, his most successful innovation, was a durable unglazed ware most characteristically blue with fine white cameo figures inspired by the ancient Roman Portland Vase. Many of the finest designs were the work of the British artist John Flaxman. The Wedgwood company went on to produce pottery and dinnerware in many different and popular patterns.

Thousands of Dollars Worth of Wedgwood Smashed by Disgruntled Employee

Temperamental artists can be dangerous. Daisy Makig-Jones, the artist and designer who made Fairyland Luster for Wedgwood, was upset when she was fired in 1931. She went into her studio and smashed every piece of her work. A single piece of her surviving work could auction for up to $55,000 today.

We will keep details of the 2006 Hamfest on the site to give you an idea of the scope of our hamfest. As plans are solidified for the 2007 version, the site will be updated.

On the third full weekend in August, the place to be for hams in the Southeastern U. S. is Huntsville, Alabama's Von Braun Center
700 Monroe Street SW. The site of one of the best hamfests in the USA.

Since the first Huntsville Hamfest in 1981, we have grown to the point where the Amateur Radio manufacturers and dealers consider us to be one of the few remaining major hamfests in the country. TIME SHARING 2006

We are back from a 3-month sojourn across the great country of the USA. During this time, we stayed at several timeshares along the way; and here is our review of these vacation resorts:

PALACE VIEW BY SPINNAKER
Branson, MO
This is a very nice family-oriented vacation resort RCI Gold Crown, in one of the best family desitations--Branson, MO. We stayed a week in a 2 bedroom lockout and invited my two sisters to join us. The guest bedroom suite had a king bed, pull-out sofa, bath and mini-kitchen, with washer/dryer, and small dining and living area. The master suite had a king bed, pull-out sofa, spa bath and shower, full kitchen, large dining and living area, with a large patio, and central heating and air.

The elevators (four floors) were centrally located in each building and luggage carts were readily available. There was always plenty of parking space and the grounds were very nicely landscaped.

The resort staff had organized daily activities at the resort, such as board games, bingo, treasure hunts, and ice cream socials. Two pools are on site, one indoor--one outdoor, in addition to an exercise room. The hot tub was a popular spot! Discount tickets to the Branson shows were available in the lobby. DSL was available in the lobby and dial-up internet was available in the unit.

All in all, a great vacation place, which we can highly recommend.

We rate this resort a 10 out of 10!

ANGEL FIRE RESORT
Angel Fire, NM

Angel Fire Resort is a hotel, of which a portion is devoted to timeshares; and it is an Affiliate resort of Fairfield Resorts. It is a ski destination--elevation 9-10,000 feet. We occupied a "studio", which was the smaller unit of a 2 bedroom lockout. The bed was a murphy bed; and there was a pull-out sofa, bath with washer/dryer, mini-kitchen with small dining and living area.

There was a small indoor pool and hot tub, near the lobby. There was no oranized activities for guests and the on-site restaurant was closed until "ski time". The studio was clean and sufficent for the two of us, except that the carpet was dirty and stained--my poor white socks were grey and dingy. Also the hallway carpeting leading to the timeshare units were dirty and stained. DSL was available in the lobby; however, dial-up could not be used in the studio because the outlets were located behind furniture that could not be moved.

The elevators (four floors) were located at the far end of the hall from our studio and it was difficult for loading and unloading, even with the luggage carts that were available. There was a "tour desk" in the lobby; but for the 5 days we were there, we never saw a person at the desk to assist in tours. There was A/C in the lobby area of the hotel, but not in the timeshare units. There was plenty of parking space available. The grounds were adequately landscaped.

We rate this resort a 7 out of 10.

The Angel Fire area is part of the "Enchanted Circle", an area including the villages of Angel Fire, Eagle Nest, Red River, and Taos, NM; and the best part of our stay was a self-driving tour of this "circle" and a quiet time at a Vietnam Memorial, build by a local doctor to remember his son, who was killed in Vietnam.

OROFINO BY STRAIGHT CREEK
Dillon, CO
This area is also a ski destination--elevation 8-9,000 feet. We occupied a two bedroom unit, with full kitchen, 2 1/2 bath, with washer/dryer, large dining and living area. The bedrooms and two baths were located upstairs. There was electric heat, but no A/C. This is apparently an older timeshare resort and was not up to par with other resorts we have visited. The furniture and mattresses really needed to be replaced.

There was no landscaping to accent the buildings and the check-in/check-out office was located several miles away. There was no planned activities for guests. There was limited parking space available.

We rate this resort a 4 out of 10.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

STONERIDGE RESORT
Blanchard, ID
Stoneridge Resort is in the beautiful "panhandle" of Idaho, about 20 miles north of Corde Alene. Our "Studio" had a king bed, pull-out sofa, bath, mini-kitchen, and small dining area. Each unit had a separate storage closet, accessed from the hallway The laundry was located at the check-in building. Thankfully, We were on the ground floor, as there were no elevators.

The resort amenities were all located very conveniently close to the resort buildings. There was an indoor pool, spa and sauna; a shuffle board area, indoor basketball court, outdoor picnic area, tennis courts and golf course. There were planned activities for guests and a complimentary hot-dog lunch on Saturday. There was limited parking. DSL was available in the lobby and dial-up was available in the units. The grounds were very nicely landscaped and there was a nice restaurant on-site.

We rate this resort a 9 out of 10.

EBAY STATS REVISITED

EBAY STATS REVISITED
More than two years ago, during the one-week eBay boycott by eBay sellers protesting significant fee increases, eBay listings fell from 19,000,000 to 12,000,000. Many eBay sellers closed their eBay stores at that time and have relocated at other fee-free or low-fee auction sites.

We have revisited the eBay stats on two other occasions, to discover the eBay listings were still hovering at the 12,000,000 level. And this week, another visit to the eBay stats reveals that eBay listings are yet again hovering, presently below the 12,000,000 figure.

The boycott is apparently still having its effect--after more than 2 1/2 years.

Vacation Village at Parkway, Kissimmee, FL Posted by Picasa

TIME SHARING IN ORLANDO

We spent two delightful weeks in the Orlando, Florida area recently at the Vacation Village at Parkway in Kissimmee. We enjoyed a two bedroom condo on the fourth floor of one of about twelve condo buildings in the complex. And they are still constructing more time share units at this location.

The swimming pools were heated and the hot tubs were refreshing. A resort shuttle was available daily to take guests to Disney and other nearby points of interest. The living room, dining area, kitchen and balcony were spacious and in pristene condition. The Master bedroom had a whirlpool tub and a spacious bath and shower.

Our particular unit was what is called a "lockout unit"; meaning, that the second bedroom is a complete separate living area, with mini kitchen, laundry, bath, bedroom, living room, dining area, and balcony. Time share owners of "lockout units" often will utilize the Master bedroom area, typically called "A" unit; and they will rent out the area "B" unit when they don't require more than one bedroom.
All of the two bedroom units at this resort also have a queeen-size pull-out sofa in each living area; which could make for a total of eight sleeping accommodations.

All in all, the Vacation Village at Parkway was a very nice resort; and we would not hesitate to spend some time there again in the future.

WE'RE BACK from our trip "down under" and ready to report on our timeshare experiences.

For the first week, we had the pleasure of great accommodations at the Cairns Outrigger, a Fairfield affiliate. The Outrigger is located just across the street from the pier in downtown Cairns, where the Coral Sea meets Northern Queensland. The resort has a delightful outdoor pool and spa and there are many local restaurants within walking distance--and oh yes, a casino just around the corner!

For the next two weeks we toured New Zealand by car--no time for timeshare stops here, but scenery beyond compare! And beautiful weather 99% of the time.

On week four we checked into The PortSea Resort in Port Douglas, Queensland, for our last week in Australia. The PortSea is located just a short distance from downtown Port Douglas; and again, our accommodations were outstanding, with palm trees overhanging our third-story balcony and a cafe adjacent to the pool and spa.

The weather in September and October is perfect for a visit to this lush, tropical part of Australia, known for its famous coral reefs and tropical forests.
