Pres Garfield's Stolen Head - From Kovel's Komments

Kovel's News Follow-up:

President Garfield's head, stolen from his statue last spring, was returned to Hiram College in Ohio in the fall. The college is trying to make sure it won't happen again, but officials are taking precautions just in case it does. Metal rods were installed to hold the head in place, and a GPS device has been embedded in the head. The college also made a cast of the head so if it's stolen again the school can make a copy. And a security camera is trained on the statue at all times.

The head was returned to the local police department by a "Good Samaritan" who refused the $1,000 reward but would not explain where the head was found. The grand jury is going to consider charges against a suspect.

Hiram, an excellent liberal arts college in northeastern Ohio, has received nationwide publicity because of the theft. The headless statue was photographed by hundreds of visitors and the college even markets a T-shirt with the slogan "Get a Head at Hiram College."

Depression Glass Continues to Brighten Tables Today

THE COLORFUL DISHES OF THE DEPRESSION ERA CONTINUE TO BRIGHTEN TABLES TODAY

Exerpts from an article by Debra Muller Price

During the 1930's,the best things in life were free. The colorful molded-glass tableware that later became known as Depression Glass was no exception. Promotional giveaways of depression glass could be found in theaters, inside oatmeal boxes and sacks of flour; and individual pieces often sold for mere pennies at the five-and-dime stores.

Depression Glass came in a variety of patterns like Cabbage Rose, Cherry Blossom, Dogwood, Pyramid and Tea Room. The colors were a rainbow--from soft pink to sunny yellow to sky blue; but green quickly emerged as a favorite.

Although an enormous amount of Depression Glass was produced, the vast majority of pieces wound up being relegated to the attic or discarded in favor of postwar products. It reminded people of the hard times of the 1930's, and Americans were ready to put those memories out of sight.

Depression Glass was all but forgotten until the 1970's, when collectors began to rediscover its inherent charms.Depression Glass looks pretty on the table and there is also a sentimental connection for many collectors, as it reminds them of their growing up time and their parents during the depression years in the U.S.A.

Wedgwood For Collectors

My husband and I have been collecting Wedgwood--mostly Jasperware--for several years. My Mother-in-Law started her collection more than 50 years ago; and when she passed away in 1999, we continued to haunt antique shops and eBay for additional pieces.

As with most collectors, we very often end up with duplicate Jasperware items. So last year, we opened our online store, Penny's Antiques & Wedgwood Pantry in an effort to find a good home for these extra pieces. Take a look; and if something sparks your interest, let us know. We are fast running out of space in our display cases and would like to pass on some of our inventory so that there will be room for more discoveries. (Grin)

I have several Wedgwood reference books and would be happy to share information from them with other collectors who may have questions about Wedgwood.

Browser Size: A Tool To See How Others View Your Website

From: Google Blog
12/16/2009 05:13:00 PM

In a newspaper, the most important story is featured on the front page. If it's a really important piece, then it's placed "above the fold," which means you can find it on the top half of the first page — the bottom half is folded behind and isn't readily seen when you first look at the newspaper.

The same concept applies to browsers as well. There's no clear line for "above the fold" on a browser — there are many different sizes of monitors, browsers are not always full screen and other things like toolbars can take up space. Consider a "Donate" button on a non-profit site. If it's far down the page, you may not see it when you first view the page. You can of course scroll downwards, but many people don't scroll and will miss it entirely. For example, on the download page for Google Earth, the install rate increased by 10% when we moved the "Download" button 100 pixels upward. We can attribute that increase to users who wanted to try out Google Earth, but didn't see the button before.

Why We Wear Red On Friday

Nation-wide, a lot of people are wearing RED on Fridays. Here's why:

The Americans who support our troops, are the silent majority. We are not
"organized" to reflect who we are, or to reflect what our opinions are.

Our idea of showing our solidarity and support for our troops are -starting Friday,
and continuing on each and every Friday, until this is over, that every
red - blooded American who supports our young men and women, WEAR
SOMETHING RED.

Word of mouth, press, TV -- let's see if we can make the United States,
on any given Friday, a sea of red much like a home football game at a
University.

If everyone shares this with other acquaintances, fellow workers, friends, and neighbors, I guarantee that it will not be long before the USA will be covered in RED - and make our troops know there are many people thinking of their well-being. You will feel better all day Friday when you wear Red!

Let's get the word out and lead by example; wear RED on Fridays.

I sent this out to everyone on my email list; hopefully, you will too.

Please forward this to everyone you know!!

Wear Red on Fridays!!

Travel And Timeshare Resorts

Travel and Time Share Resorts

Since we retired, my husband and I have been traveling and enjoying the use of our various time share resorts scattered across the USA and other countries. From time to time, we will post our travel experiences and hope to hear from other like wanderers.

We like driving to various parts of the USA and Canada, and enjoying the varied scenery along the way. Sometimes we take the Northern Routes, the Southern Routes, and the Inbetween Routes, depending on the time of year and the weather. Over the past five or so years, I think we have been to about all of the 50 states and two Canadian Provinces.

Sometimes, during our travels in the USA, we take time to seek out local Antique Shops, in search of our favorite "things". We have even purchased or sold items on auction online sites; and then made arrangements to pick up or deliver the items in person, if we happen to be traveling in that direction. It is interesting to meet the Seller or Buyer in person. Look at my website, Penny's Pantry, for some of the "things" we have found in duplicate.

The Time Share places we frequent are both "Weeks" resorts, where you stay for a full week, and "Points" resorts, where you can stay from two nights or more. We have found a need for both of these vacation options. And inbetween resort accommodations, we find our favorite motels/hotels when just an overnight stay is needed.

Geminid Meteor Shower Dec 12 & 13

"End-of-Year Sky Show: Geminid Meteor Shower Dec 12&13"
By Jon Brooks, contributing writer, and Vera H-C Chan, Y! senior editor

The popular Perseid meteor shower may get the fair-weather attention, but the real show comes in winter.

Most amateur stargazers huddle by the fireplace in December, when the Geminids rain debris above the Earth's atmosphere. A winter wallop has dropped temperatures to freezing in some parts of the nation, but don't let a difference of a few degrees Fahrenheit keep you from seeing the night show that NASA considers the "best meteor shower of 2009."

The shower (nearly) ends a stellar year for skywatching on a high note—which is appropriate, given that 2009 is the International Year of Astronomy. Meteor showers and plenty of other space-related phenomena captured cyberspace imagination this year.

Symptoms of Corrupting Sickness

From The Gathering of Eagles:

The lady in the picture is the mother of an American that was ambushed in Fallujah, Iraq. Her son was murdered. His body was dragged around in the streets of the city, then burned and hung from the upper trusses of a bridge. The murderers gathered to celebrate and have their photos taken with the trophy.
The young sailor in the picture is one of the Navy SEALs that later captured the leader of the band of terrorist butchers and brought him to justice.

If the story ended there, it would still be an acceptable feel-good, good-guys-win story. Unfortunately, that's not the case - this Navy SEAL is facing criminal charges. Because, somewhere along the timeline of his capture, the terrorist murderer suffered a school-yard fat lip, his captors are now being charged with nothing short of war crimes and facing discharge and imprisonment.

So, instead of celebration of justice served and heroes honored, these photos record betrayal, compounded mourning and the effects of a corrupting sickness.

Google Caffeine And The New Ranking Factors

Google Caffeine And The New Ranking Factors
12 2009 Sunday6 By Titus Hoskins

Google Caffeine is the name given to Google’s “Next Generation” search engine, which it will use to rank and index all the pages on the wonderful world wide web. According to all indications, this is not just another one of Google’s infamous Updates, but a major “Overhaul” of its index and algorithm – the complex formula and calculations Google uses to rank all web pages, including yours.

If that doesn’t sound ominous enough, according to Matt Cutts (Google Spokesperson) one database is already showing Google Caffeine, and the full blown version will be released after the holidays. The reasoning behind this – Google doesn’t want to upset webmasters and site owners during the lucrative holiday buying season. In the past, other major Google Updates have come around this time of the year, most notably the “Florida Update”
which severely affected many web sites and webmasters.

All About The Dragon

All About The Dragon

Dragon is one of the two official magazines for source material for the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game and associated products. TSR, Inc. originally launched the monthly printed magazine in 1976 to succeed the company's earlier publication, The Strategic Review. The final printed issue was #359 in September 2007. Shortly after the last print issue shipped in mid-August, 2007, Wizards of the Coast (part of Hasbro, Inc.), the publication's current intellectual property rightsholder, re-launched Dragon as an online Magazine, continuining on the numbering of the print edition.

The last Strategic Review: In 1975, TSR, Inc. began publishing The Strategic Review. At the time, roleplaying games were still seen as a sub-genre of the wargaming industry, and the magazine was designed not only to support Dungeons & Dragons and TSR's other games, but also to cover wargaming in general. In short order, however, the popularity and growth of Dungeons & Dragons made it clear that the game had not only separated itself from its wargaming origins, but had launched an entirely new industry unto itself.
