Quote of the Day

"As a man is said to have a right to his property, he may be equally said to have a property in his rights. Where an excess of power prevails, property of no sort is duly respected. No man is safe in his opinions, his person, his faculties, or his possessions."

--James Madison, National Gazette Essay, March 27, 1792

Joke Of The Day

From The London Times:

Outside the Bristol Zoo, in England , there is a parking lot for 150 cars and 8 coaches, or buses. It was manned by a very pleasant attendant with a ticket machine charging cars about $1.40 and coaches about $7.

This parking attendant worked there solid for all of 25 years. Then, one day, he just didn't turn up for work.

"Oh well", said Bristol Zoo Management - "we'd better phone up the City Council and get them to send a new parking attendant . . "

"Err . . . no", said the Council, "that parking lot is your responsibility."

"Err . . . no", said Bristol Zoo Management, "the attendant was employed by the City Council, wasn't he?"
"Err . . . no!" insisted the Council.

Sitting in his villa somewhere on the coast of Spain (presumably), is a man who had been taking the parking lot fees, estimated at 400 (about $560) per day at Bristol Zoo for the last 25 years. Assuming 7 days a week, this amounts to just over 3.6 million ($7 million - or $ 280,000 every year for 25 years)!

And no one even knows his name. Talk about flying under the radar!!

Electronics History

1947 William Shockley invents the transistor. First popular use will be the transistor radio. Electronics become smaller.

The first transistor was invented at Bell Laboratories on December 16, 1947 by William Shockley (seated at Brattain's laboratory bench), John Bardeen (left) and Walter Brattain (right). This was perhaps the most important electronics event of the 20th century, as it later made possible the integrated circuit and microprocessor that are the basis of modern electronics. Prior to the transistor the only alternative to its current regulation and switching functions (TRANSfer resISTOR) was the vacuum tube, which could only be miniaturized to a certain extent, and wasted a lot of energy in the form of heat. Although video was possible with vacuum tube equipment, as was the case with the Ampex VRX-1000, without the transistor video products would never have gotten very small.

The picture on the left above shows the first point contact transistor built by Walter Brattain. It consisted of a plastic triangle lightly suspended above a germanium crystal which itself was sitting on a metal plate attached to a voltage source. A strip of gold was wrapped around the point of the triangle with a tiny gap cut into the gold at the precise point it came in contact with the germanium crystal. The germanium acted as a semiconductor so that a small electric current entering on one side of the gold strip came out the other side as a proportionately amplified current.

Happy Independence Day

Today, on July 4, our nation celebrates Independence Day -- when, 233 years ago, 56 Patriots signed their names to the Declaration of Independence, pledging "to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor." With the signing of the Declaration, they conceived a nation whose people would enjoy the blessings of liberty.

Americans enjoy more freedoms than in any other nation, and we still have the means to resist tyranny, whether it comes at us in redcoats, jackboots or from nattily-dressed lawyers with graying ponytails.

It's a great time to reflect on our heritage and join the resistance in any capacity we can. Attending a July 4th Tea Party would be a good start.

We wish you the best and hope you can spend time with family and friends in celebration of our God-given freedom, for those men and women with the foresight to protect our liberty in the law, and for those who have paid the ultimate price defending it.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Perhaps the most important lesson we should learn on every July 4th is that each generation must earn its own liberty.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Happy Independence Day to all. We will be attending the Tea Party Rally in Monterey, CA this afternoon.

The Grandview At Las Vegas

This Week we are high-lighting the Grandview at Las Vegas Timeshare Resort, a Gold Crown RCI exchange resort.

The Grandview is located South of "The Strip" and adjacent to the South Point Casino. It is away from all the "glitz" of The Strip; but The Grandview offers complimentary shuttle service to Excalibur every day, where you are in walking distance of most of the casinos and where you can catch the tram to points further North on The Strip.

We have stayed at Grandview in the past and were very pleased with the location. The accommodations were very good and there are three pools and spas for your enjoyment.

From Kovel's Comments June 24, 2009

From Kovel's Comments, June 24, 2009:

A reader, S.C., emailed to ask who gets the money for the stolen Lincoln stamp mentioned last week. The "Ice House" cover (envelope) that bore the stamp was stolen in 1967. Aetna Insurance paid the owner, J. David Baker, $86,000 to cover the loss of the Ice House cover and about 250 other covers that were stolen at the same time. Most of the stolen covers were found and returned in 1978. In 2006 a couple claimed to have found the cover while they were sorting through a dead friends' estate. Another source says the couple claimed they bought the stamp at a flea market twenty years earlier. Another source says the couple claimed they bought the cover at a flea market. The couple took the envelope to a stamp shop in Chicago where it was identified and the police were contacted. The statute of limitations had expired on the 1967 theft, so the case went to court.

Who owned the stamp -- the finders, the original owners, the insurance company, or another collector who had offered to buy it when it surfaced? The insurance company had been involved in several mergers and the judge ruled it was no longer the same company that had insured the stamp. The collector had no proof he had purchased the rights to buy the stamp because those involved were dead. The ownership was finally awarded to the Baker estate in 2008. So the money, $431,250, went to the Baker heirs.

But the whole story is even more complicated. It is part of a real life detective drama involving a fine arts thief, the Chicago mob, a porn shop owner, a murder, a blackmail demand for the return of the stamp, and the suicide of a man who was accused of selling bogus collectibles. To this day no one admits to knowing where the stamp has been all these years.

Princess Phones

The Princess telephone was introduced by AT&T in 1959. It was a compact telephone designed for convenient use in the bedroom, and contained a light-up dial for use as a night-light. It was commonly known with the slogan "It's little...It's lovely...It lights". Its dial was in the base of the telephone. Contemporary advertising demonstrates that this telephone was marketed to women. As a result, a broad range of colors were offered, including pink, red, yellow, moss green, black, white, beige, ivory, light blue, turquoise, and gray.

The designer of the Princess was the famed industrial designer Henry Dreyfuss, working closely with the engineers at Bell Laboratories. Later redesigns were done by Donald Genaro of the Dreyfuss design firm (Genaro redesigned the case so that it could be more easily picked up).

The Princess was unique in two aspects: it required an external electric transformer to power the light-up dial, and when the telephone began production, Western Electric did not have a ringer small enough to fit inside the case; an external ringer was required as in the "candlestick phone" of forty years earlier.

Early versions of the Princess were known as 701 series phones. These required the external ringer. Customers complained that the phone was so light that it would slide off surfaces while dialing, so a lead weight was added.

Later models included the M1A ringer. The rotary dial version was known as the 702B (the modular version would be labeled 702BM). Another model of the Princess was the model 711B, a slide switch /push-button, two line phone with exclusion on line 1. A ten button Touch Tone version was known as the 1702B, while the standard twelve button arrangement was known as the 2702B (modular version was the 2702BM). Several other variations were made and can be viewed on this external site.[1]

The telephone was produced at the Western Electric Indianapolis, and later Shreveport Works plant, also the location of 500/2500 series telephone production. The Trimline telephone is often confused with the Princess because the Trimline dial lights up, even though the dial on the Trimline is in the handset.

The Princess underwent several changes in its production run:

In 1963, the Bell System introduced touchtone dialing, and Western Electric began production of a touch-tone model, with 10 numerical keys (lacking today's * and # keys). The internal network of the Princess was reduced in size the same year, allowing a small, quiet bell ringer to be placed to the left of the touch-tone dial.
In the late 1970s, AT&T introduced "modular" telephone plugs, with the RJ11 standard home telephone jack. Most customers who had Princess telephones were converted to modular dial.

In 1983, AT&T was preparing itself for divestiture of the Bell System. It started American Bell, a separate sales subsidiary of Western Electric and the Bell Operating Companies. AT&T introduced a non-light up dial with white keys to be sold in Phone Center Stores (these sets were marked "CS" on the bottom for "consumer sales"). Post-divestiture colors added after 1984 included slate blue and light green.

In 1993, the Princess was heavily redesigned. Although it retained the same handset & oval shape it has had since its introduction, a new dial was introduced. The dial still required an external transformer for night-light use; a handset volume control was added to the dial pad; phone number "card" was moved from below the dialpad to the location of the rest for the microphone. This model was called the "Signature Princess", and was freely available for lease; only available for purchase at AT&T Phone Centers, which closed in 1996.

In 1994, AT&T ended production of the Princess telephone. It continues to lease the Signature Princess model. Due to its removal from production, and its attractive design, the Princess has become an extremely collectible phone. Princess telephones in pink, turquoise, and black are among the rarest colors of the phones and most valuable.

The Meaning of the 13 Folds of the Flag

There is an email floating around attributing a meaning to each of the 13 folds of the US Flag, used in military funerals. While this email describes a touching rendition, it is not an offical one; and is used only when the deceased family requests it.

The Truth:
The meaning of the folding of the American flag that is described in this eRumor is not without importance, but it is not official and not required.

Public Law 94-344, known as the Federal Flag Code, is the law of the land regarding the handling and displaying of the American flag. It does not include anything regarding the significance or meaning of folding the flag. The code was first adopted by Congress in 1923 and revised numerous times.

According to the American Legion, the code does not call for a ceremonial folding of the flag and the folding procedure is also traditional. Same for the meanings of the folds. Nobody seems to know when or where that originated or who wrote it. There is speculation that it may have come from a chaplain who attached the mostly Judeo-Christian religious meanings to the folds, perhaps for a burial ceremony.

Official or not, the statement has gained status as the traditional meaning of the folds and was found in many governmental and military manuals and recited at numerous military funerals.

In October, 2007, the National Cemetery Administration banned the practice of giving the meaning of the folds of the flag at all national cemeteries, but the decision was quickly revised. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs issued a statement on 10/20/07 saying that any recitations at the graveside of a veteran can reflect the wishes of the family. In other words, if the family wants the meaning of the folds to be included, it can be included.

One additional note: The eRumor says the 21-gun salute originated from adding the digits of 1776. That is not true. According to Arlington Cemetery, the 21-gun salute evolved from many years of various traditions of honoring dignitaries.

Truth Or Fiction

Galaxy M87 Most Massive Black Hole Find

Texas-Size Computer Finds Most Massive Black Hole In Galaxy M87

The illustration shows the relationship between the mass of a galaxy's central black hole and the mass of its central bulge. The new higher mass Gebhardt and Thomas computer modeled for M87's black hole, 6.4 billion solar masses, could change this relationship. They used a more complete computer model than previous work. This may mean that the black holes in all nearby massive galaxies are more massive than we think, signaling a change in our understanding of the relationship between a black hole and its surrounding galaxy. Credit: Tim Jones/UT-Austin after K. Cordes and S. Brown (STScI).

by Staff Writers
Pasadena CA (SPX) Jun 09, 2009

Astronomers Karl Gebhardt (The University of Texas at Austin) and Jens Thomas (Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics) have used new computer modeling techniques to discover that the black hole at the heart of M87, one the largest nearby giant galaxies, is two to three times more massive than previously thought.
Weighing in at 6.4 billion times the Sun's mass, it is the most massive black hole yet measured with a robust technique, and suggests that the accepted black hole masses in nearby large galaxies may be off by similar amounts. This has consequences for theories of how galaxies form and grow, and might even solve a long-standing astronomical paradox.

Gebhardt will detail these results in a press conference June 8 at 12 Noon PDT at the 214th meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Pasadena, Calif. They will be published later this summer in The Astrophysical Journal, in a paper by Gebhardt and Thomas.

Remembering D-Day 1944

World War II, June 6, 1944
The Battle of Normandy was fought during World War II in the summer of 1944, between the Allied nations and German forces occupying Western Europe. More than 60 years later, the Normandy Invasion, or D-Day, remains the largest seaborne invasion in history, involving nearly three million troops crossing the English Channel from England to Normandy in occupied France.

Twelve Allied nations provided fighting units that participated in the invasion, including Australia, Canada, Belgium, France, Czechoslovakia, Greece, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Operation Overlord was the codename for the Allied invasion of northwest Europe. The assault phase, or the establishment of a secure foothold, was known as Operation Neptune. Operation Neptune began on D-Day (June 1, 1944) and ended on June 30, when the Allies had established a firm foothold in Normandy. Operation Overlord also began on D-Day, and continued until Allied forces crossed the River Seine on August 19.

The battle began months before the invasion, when Allied bombers began to pound the Normandy coast and farther south, to destroy transportation links, and disrupt the German army's build-up of their military strength. More than 300 planes dropped 13,000 bombs over Normandy in advance of the invasion. Six parachute regiments, with more than 13,000 men, also went ahead to cut railroad lines, blow up bridges, and seize landing fields. Gliders also brough in men, light artillery, jeeps, and small tanks.

All About Field Day--Always Held On the Last Weekend in June

Annual Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Exercise

Field Day is an annual amateur radio exercise, widely sponsored by IARU regions and member organizations, encouraging emergency communications preparedness among amateur radio operators. In the United States, it is typically the largest single emergency preparedness exercise in the country, with over 30,000 operators participating each year.

Since the first ARRL Field Day in 1933, radio amateurs throughout North America have practiced the rapid deployment of radio communications equipment in environments ranging from operations under tents in remote areas to operations inside Emergency Operations Centers (EOCs). Operations using emergency and alternative power sources are highly encouraged, since electricity and other public infrastructures are often among the first to fail during a natural disaster or severe weather.

To determine the effectiveness of the exercise and of each participant's operations, there is an integrated contesting component, and many clubs also engage in concurrent leisure activities (camping out, cookouts, etc.). Operations typically last a continuous twenty-four hours, requiring scheduled relief operators to keep stations on the air. Additional contest points are awarded for experimenting with unusual modes, making contacts via satellite, and involving youth in the activity.

"Once each May, amid the quiet hills and rolling lanes and breeze-brushed trees of Arlington National Cemetery, far above the majestic Potomac and the monuments and memorials of our Nation's Capital just beyond, the graves of America's military dead are decorated with the beautiful flag that in life these brave souls followed and loved.

This scene is repeated across our land and around the world, wherever our defenders rest. Let us hold it our sacred duty and our inestimable privilege on this day to decorate these graves ourselves -- with a fervent prayer and a pledge of true allegiance to the cause of liberty, peace, and country for which America's own have ever served and sacrificed. ... Our pledge and our prayer this day are those of free men and free women who know that all we hold dear must constantly be built up, fostered, revered and guarded vigilantly from those in every age who seek its destruction.

We know, as have our Nation's defenders down through the years, that there can never be peace without its essential elements of liberty, justice and independence. Those true and only building blocks of peace were the lone and lasting cause and hope and prayer that lighted the way of those whom we honor and remember this Memorial Day. To keep faith with our hallowed dead, let us be sure, and very sure, today and every day of our lives, that we keep their cause, their hope, their prayer, forever our country's own." --Ronald Reagan

Memorial Day Origin

From: Memorial Day Origin
MEMORIAL DAY ORIGIN

Memorial days did not start in Petersburg, Virginia; Waterloo, New York; or any other city in the United States. Memorial days upon which the graves of the communities' heroes were decorated with flowers and garlands are ancient customs originating in Greece 2,500 years ago.

Memorial days were set aside during the American Civil War in both the United States and the Confederate States of America.

Following the Civil War, also known as the War Between the States, various communities started having memorial services for the war dead. The city of Waterloo, New York was officially recognized as the place where the first memorial services were held after the Civil War.

Petersburg, Virginia, has a clear, unbroken, logical chain of events making it the inspiration for and origin of the NATIONAL Memorial Day.

Friday Mornings At The Pentagon

Let us salute them every Friday morning from wherever we are.
"Still Serving God and America"

Subject: FW: FRIDAY MORNINGS AT THE PENTAGON --

Joe Galloway - Co-author of "We Were
Soldiers Once..... And Young"

FRIDAY MORNING AT THE PENTAGON
By JOSEPH L. GALLOWAY
McClatchy Newspapers

Over the last 12 months, 1,042 soldiers, Marines, sailors and Air Force
personnel have given their lives in the terrible duty that is war.
Thousands more have come home on stretchers, horribly wounded and
facing months or years in military hospitals.

This week, I'm turning my space over to a good friend and former
roommate, Army Lt. Col. Robert Bateman, who recently completed a year
long tour of duty in Iraq and is now back at the Pentagon.

Here's Lt. Col. Bateman's account of a little-known ceremony that fills
the halls of the Army corridor of the Pentagon with cheers, applause
and many tears every Friday morning. It first appeared on May 17 on
the Weblog of media critic and pundit Eric Alterman at the Media
Matters for America Website.

"It is 110 yards from the "E" ring to the "A" ring of the Pentagon.
This section of the Pentagon is newly renovated; the floors shine, the
hallway is broad, and the lighting is bright. At this instant the
entire length of the corridor is packed with officers, a few sergeants
and some civilians, all crammed tightly three and four deep against the
walls. There are thousands here.

This hallway, more than any other, is the Army' hallway.
The G3 offices line one side, G2 the other, G8 is around the corner.
All Army. Moderate conversations flow in a low buzz. Friends who may
not have seen each other for a few weeks, or a few years, spot each
other, cross the way and renew their friendships.

Everyone shifts to ensure an open path remains down the center. The air
conditioning system was not designed for this press of bodies in this
area. The temperature is rising already. Nobody cares.10:36
hours: The clapping starts at the E-Ring. That is the outer most of
the five rings of the Pentagon and it is closest to the entrance to the
building.. This clapping is low, sustained, hearty. It is applause with
a deep emotion behind it as it moves forward in a wave down the length
of the hallway.

A steady rolling wave of sound it is, moving at the pace of the soldier
in the wheelchair who marks the forward edge with his presence. He is
the first. He is missing the greater part of one leg, and some of his
wounds are still suppurating.. By his age I expect that he is a
private, or perhaps a private first class.

Captains, majors, lieutenant colonels and colonels meet his gaze and
nod as they applaud, soldier to soldier. Three years ago when I
described one of these events, those lining the hallways were somewhat
different. The applause a little wilder, perhaps in private guilt for
not having shared in the burden. Yet.

Now almost everyone lining the hallway is, like the man in the
wheelchair, also a combat veteran. This steadies the applause, but I
think deepens the sentiment. We have all been there now. The soldier's
chair is pushed by, I believe, a full colonel. Behind him, and
stretching the length from Rings E to A, come more of his peers, each
private, corporal, or sergeant assisted as need be by a field grade
officer.

11:00 hours: Twenty-four minutes of steady applause. My hands hurt, and
I laugh to myself at how stupid that sounds in my own head. My hands
hurt.. Please! Shut up and clap. For twenty-four minutes, soldier after
soldier has come down this hallway - 20, 25, 30. Fifty-three legs come
with them, and perhaps only 52 hands or arms, but down this hall came
30 solid hearts.

They pass down this corridor of officers and applause, and then meet
for a private lunch, at which they are the guests of honor, hosted by
the generals. Some are wheeled along. Some insist upon getting out of
their chairs, to march as best they can with their chin held up, down
this hallway, through this most unique audience. Some are catching
handshakes and smiling like a politician at a Fourth of July parade.
More than a couple of them seem amazed and are smiling shyly.

There are families with them as well: the 18-year-old war-bride
pushing her 19-year-old husband's wheelchair and not quite
understanding why her husband is so affected by this, the boy she grew
up with, now a man, who had never shed a tear is crying; the older
immigrant Latino parents who have, perhaps more than their wounded
mid-20s son, an appreciation for the emotion given on their son's
behalf. No man in that hallway, walking or clapping, is ashamed by the
silent tears on more than a few cheeks.
An Airborne Ranger wipes his eyes only to better see. A couple of the
officers in this crowd have themselves been a part of this parade in
the past.

These are our men, broken in body they may be, but they are our
brothers, and we welcome them home. This parade has gone on, every
single Friday, all year long, for more than four years.

Did you know that? The media hasn't yet told the story. And probably
never will.

Rare American Silver Dollar Sells for $2.3 Million

DOLLAR SELLS FOR $2.3 MILLION

One of the rarest American coins, the 1804 Adams-Carter silver dollar named for two previous owners of the coin, brought $2.3 million at a Heritage Galleries auction about two weeks ago. Because of the recession, the coin sold for a half-million dollars less than it would have brought last year, according to the New Jersey dealer who bought it. The 15 known 1804 silver dollars were not struck that year. The first eight were made in 1834 as gifts to foreign heads of state. Another was struck in 1857, and six more were made later--perhaps illegally by a U.S. Mint employee.

Well, we don't have an Adams-Carter silver dollar; but we do have some unusual coins which we will be listing in the near future at our CHShops.Com Mall Store at: Penny's Antiques & Wedgwood Pantry Keep checking our online mall store for these new listings.

Massimino is part of the seven-man STS-125 shuttle mission to the Hubble Telescope.
Massimino is a mission specialist and one of the four in the crew to do spacewalks to service the Hubble Telescope. They are riding the shuttle Atlantis.

In his latest tweet, Massimino posted: "From orbit: Launch was awesome!! I am feeling great, working hard, & enjoying the magnificent views, the adventure of a lifetime has begun!"

His last message sent from earth was posted on May 11, hours before the launch: "I'm going to put my spacesuit on, next stop: Earth Orbit!!"

Massimino has been sending tweets since April 4th where he has posted updates about his shuttle mission training and preparations.

Since he started using Twitter, Massimino has so far registered 244,421 followers.

The STS-125 is the fourth "servicing mission" to the Hubble Telescope. The crew will be installing a new spectrograph, wide field camera and gyroscopes, and replace guidance sensors and repair the telescope's data handling unit.

Other members of the STS-125 mission are Commander Scott Altman, Pilot Gregory Johnson, Spacewalker Michael Good, Flight Engineer Megan McArthur, Mission Specialist John Grunsfield, and Spacewalker Andrew Feustel.

When The Music Stopped

WHEN THE MUSIC STOPPED

For those who are unaware, at a military theater the National Anthem is played before every movie.

From a Chaplain in Iraq :

I recently attended a showing of 'Superman 3' here at LSA Anaconda (Balad Airport in Iraq, north of Bagdad ). We have a large auditorium we use for movies, as well as memorial services and other large gatherings.

As is the custom back in the States, we stood and snapped to attention when the National Anthem began before the main feature. All was going as planned until about three-quarters of the way through when the National Anthem music stopped. Now, what would happen if this occurred with 1,000 18-22 year-olds back in the States? I imagine there would be hoots, catcalls, laughter, a few rude comments, and everyone would sit down and call for a movie. Of course, that is, if they had stood for the National Anthem in the first place .

Here, the 1,000 Marines continued to stand at attention, eyes fixed forward. The music started again. The Marines continued to quietly stand at attention. And again, at the same point, the music stopped. What would you expect to happen? Even here I would imagine laughter, as everyone finally sat down and expected the movie to start. But here, you could have heard a pin drop . Every soldier continued to stand at attention.

Suddenly there was a lone voice, then a dozen, and quickly the room was filled with the voices of a thousand soldiers, finishing where the recording left off: 'And the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh, say does that Star-Spangled Banner yet wave, o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave'. It was the most inspiring moment I have had here in Iraq .

I wanted you to know what kind of soldiers are serving you here. Remember them as they fight for you! Pass this along as a reminder to others to be ever in prayer for all our soldiers serving us here, at home and abroad. For many have already paid the ultimate price.

Written by: Chaplain Jim Higgins

They stand on the wall for us. We sleep in peace because of them.

Tobacciana

Here is an interesting article about Tobacciana:

Saturday, March 28

Kovel: "'Tobacciana' Are Smoking-Hot Collectibles"

I'm sure collectibles expert, Terry Kovel, is correct about that trend.

Also, the wide variety, availability, & low cost of smoking-related items -- tobacciana -- makes them easily within reach.

Kovel provides helpful history about these collectibles:

"Smoking was an important part of the life of a well-to-do gentleman in the 19th century. A cigar after dinner was routine. Smoking paraphernalia was created not only to be useful but also to show off wealth.

"Collectors today still search for all kinds of tobacco-related items, although smoking has lost favor. Pipes, ashtrays, cigar holders, lighters, cigarette or cigar cases, cigarette or cigar boxes, cigarette dispensers and smoking stands are collected.

How To Identify Vintage Cut Crystal

How to Identify Vintage Cut Crystal
by eHow Hobbies, Games & Toys Editor

Introduction
Cut crystal has been a favorite heirloom to pass down to generations for hundreds of years. Many manufacturers over the years have created some gorgeous designs. You'll find vintage cut crystal in the form of wine and water glasses, decanters, bowls, plates and other fine cut crystal items.

Instructions
Difficulty: Easy
Steps
Step One, Look for a manufacturer's signature on the item when you try to identify vintage cut crystal. The name of the manufacturer is usually acid-etched on the bottom of the piece. For instance, the name "Waterford" (an Irish company that leads in cut crystal creation, especially for the bridal market) might appear on the bottom of a wine glass or water goblet. But not all vintage cut crystal can be identified this way. Not all name brand pieces were marked by the manufacturer and some patterns are so old that they can't be traced back to a company.

Step Two, Identify vintage cut crystal by examining the pattern. As the name implies, cut crystal has shapes, designs, patterns and prisms cut into the glass. Distinctive elegant patterns are often seen in Victorian era pieces. Beautifully enameled colors that trim the cut crystal designs are often found also, especially in the Victorian.

Step Three, Try the age-old test of fine crystal collectors in the United States and abroad when you want to identify vintage cut crystal. Flick the tip of your finger against the edge of a cut crystal glass. It should ring with an echoing musical tone created by vibration.

Step Four, Taste wine from a wine glass that you think is vintage cut crystal. Whether vintage, or recently manufactured, many wine experts insist that fine cut crystal makes the wine zip with a clearer, crisper taste. Wine tasters have been able to tell the difference in imitation cut glass and fine cut crystal simply by comparing the taste of wine from each glass. Experts say that when you examine a fine cut crystal glass under a microscope, you can see that the glass has a coarse, uneven surface. This texture and surface is what magnifies the taste of the wine.

US Olympic Shooting Team Updates

US Olympic Shooting Team Updates

Sanderson Captures Rapid Fire Gold in Beijing

Keith Sanderson (San Antonio, Texas), a 2008 Olympian, claimed the gold medal in the Men’s 25m Rapid Fire Pistol event at the 2009 ISSF Rifle/Pistol World Cup in Beijing today. Sanderson won the gold on the same range where he finished in fifth place at the 2008 Olympic Games last August in the same event.

Sanderson entered the final round in first place after shooting a match score of 584 points and maintained his lead through the final to finish on top of the podium after firing 196.5 points in the final, finishing with an overall score of 780.5 points.

2009 Rifle/Pistol National Junior Olympic Championships Winners

Over 300 of the nation’s best junior rifle and pistol shooters gathered at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. April 3-19 to compete for National Junior Olympic (JO) titles. The 2009 USA Shooting Rifle/Pistol National Junior Olympic Championships was an exciting 17-day event that began with the rifle competition and concluded with the pistol events.

Junior shooters from all over the United States competed in nine out of the 10 rifle/pistol events that are contested at the Olympic Games. Men’s Rapid Fire Pistol is the only Olympic event that is not fired at the JOs, but the Junior Sport Pistol event for both men and women will likely be included in the competition schedule for the 2010 National Junior Olympic Championships.

Michael McPhail Wins Bronze in Prone at Beijing World Cup

Michael McPhail (Darlington, Wis.) claimed the second medal of the 2009 ISSF World Cup season for the U.S. today by taking home the bronze medal in the Men’s 50m Prone Rifle event at the ISSF Rifle/Pistol World Cup in Beijing, China.

McPhail, a member of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU), entered the final in seventh place with a match score of 594 points and fired the highest final score of 104.7 to climb all the way to third place, finishing with a total of 698.7 points and only missing the silver by one tenth of a point.

Spirit Resumes Driving While Analysis Of Problem Behaviors Continues

"We expect we will see more of the amnesia events, and we want to learn more about them when we do," said JPL's Sharon Laubach, chief of the rover sequencing team, which develops and checks each day's set of commands."

by Staff Writers
Pasadena CA (JPL) Apr 27, 2009

NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Spirit drove on Thursday for the first time since April 8, acting on commands from engineers who are still investigating bouts of amnesia and other unusual behavior exhibited by Spirit in the past two weeks.

The drive took Spirit about 1.7 meters (5.6 feet) toward destinations about 150 meters (about 500 feet) away. The rover has already operated more than 20 times longer than its original prime mission on Mars.

This week, rover engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., judged that it would be safe to send Spirit commands for Thursday's drive. They also anticipated that, if the rover did have another amnesia event, the day's outcome could be helpful in diagnosing those events.

S 843 Introduced This Week

Brady Campaign And Lautenberg Unite To Mislead And Control--Again

S 843 Introduced This Week

This week, in a typically misleading move designed to bolster their political agenda rather than reduce violent crime, the Brady Campaign released a report calling for background checks on "all gun sales in America, including at gun shows." The Brady report was intentionally designed to correspond with, and bolster, a "gun show loophole" bill (S. 843) introduced this week by fanatical anti-gun Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ). In fact, the Brady report was released at the press conference Lautenberg held earlier this week.

Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Campaign, said in the group's press release, "We can do this. It will have no impact on any law-abiding gun owner in the country." Of course, that is absolutely false-the proposal will ONLY impact law-abiding gun owners, including any law-abiding person selling a firearm to a law-abiding buyer. Does Helmke really think that criminals, drug cartel members, and violent gang thugs are going to start legally purchasing firearms and submitting to a background check? Law-breakers, by definition, break the law. They are criminals; they are predatory, they operate outside of the law. You know that, we know that, Lautenberg knows that, even Helmke knows that.

How Much SEO Do You Need To Get Top Rankings?

How Much SEO Do
You Need To Get Top Rankings?

By Titus Hoskins (c) 2009

Perhaps one of the biggest misconceptions, perpetuated by industry SEO experts, is that a website must follow perfect SEO strategies to get top rankings. While adhering to simple common SEO standards does help the search engines both find and index your site more quickly, it doesn't guarantee by any stretch of the imagination that following those SEO guidelines will propel your site to the top of the rankings.

If only search engine optimization was that easy!

No doubt, there are some SEO faux pas that will do harm to your site's rankings, especially in Google, the ultimate hall-monitor all puffed up and ready to pounce on any misbehaving webmaster. Things such as keyword stuffing, keyword spamming or linking out to bad neighborhoods such as link farms, pharmaceutical or gambling sites may get you blacklisted.

Updates From the States--Montana Considers Bold Gun-Rights Bill

The Montana Shooting Sports Association is supporting HB 228 and wants the Legislature to pass this bill. The National Rifle Association also endorses it.

UPDATE April 7: The conference committee decided to keep Montana's existing permit system for carrying concealed guns. (It went along with the March 30 action by the Senate Judiciary Committee.) The Shooting Association's Marbut says even so, enough provisions of HB 228 got passed by both chambers, it's still a victory for gun-rights advocates -- making it easier to use a gun against people who act threatening, without being hassled later by cops and prosecutors.

UPDATE April 20: The Bill has been passed by the Montana Legislators and is awaiting signing by the Governor.

Bargain Silver Jewelry

BARGAIN SILVER JEWELRY

Modernist silver jewelry is hot, especially Mexican pieces and American pieces. But prices are getting high, so some collectors are searching for Siam jewelry, the tourist jewelry made in Thailand in the 1960s and later. Pieces are usually silver with black enamel decorations of Siamese gods, boats, and other traditional designs.

Also starting to attract interest is midcentury silver jewelry from Peru. The Peruvian jewelry designs are based on pre-Columbian art.

Depression Glass From A To Z, Part IV

Pineapple & floral (no 618)
Indiana reissued the diamond shaped comport and the 7 inch bowl in pink, cobalt, avocado, and crystal with sprayed on colors. Only crystal was originally made so the other colors are no problem. Both items tend to be roughly molded and heavier than the originals. The new 7 inch bowls also have smooth rims instead of the wavy rim that the old bowls have.

Princess
Candy jars and shakers have shown up in cobalt, amber, light blue, pink and green. Both are poor quality, badly molded with bubbles and a greasy feel to the glass. The colors are wrong and some are marked ‘china’ with a paper label.

Pyramid (no.610)
In 1974-5, indiana produced the berry bowl, 4 part relish, and tumbler, in blue and black as part of their tiara line. These colors were never made originally.

Royal lace
The cookie jar, juice and water tumbler have been reproduced in cobalt blue. Cookie jar: the mold is very poor, with lots of bubbles in the glass and a very weak pattern. Old lids should have a mod seam running across the knob (divides the lid into 2 halves.) New ones are missing this seam. Tumblers: some are missing the design in the base. Thicker glass and shorter than the originals with too much glass in the bottom of the tumbler. To Be Continued.

Another Assault Weapons Gun Ban?

Obama Wants Gun Bans
Never mind that the Supreme Court recently declared that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to keep and bear arms.

The Obama administration plans to reinstate the Clinton administration ban on so-called "assault weapons" that expired in 2004 under the ban's sunset provision. They have other gun controls measures in mind as well.

"As President Obama indicated during the campaign, there are just a few gun-related changes that we would like to make, and among them would be to reinstitute the ban on the sale of assault weapons," Attorney General Eric Holder told reporters on February 25.

Holder said that re-banning "assault weapons" would not only be good for America, it would help Mexico, which is currently plagued by gun violence among drug cartels.

Holder neglected to explain why American freedom should be limited at the request of a foreign nation. Most glaringly, he did not explain how the federal government, utterly unable to stop immigrants or drugs from freely crossing the border, could somehow be successful in stopping weapons from doing so.

AuctionBytes at the Search Engine Strategies conference in New York

Excerpts from the following article:

From the Editor
By Ina Steiner
AuctionBytes.com
April 05, 2009

As more of our readers branch out from eBay to set up shop on their own sites and other venues, I traveled to New York last month to attend the Search Engine Strategies (SES) conference, looking for the latest search engine marketing techniques designed to increase traffic and sales. While larger companies have scaled back on travel budgets, the SES conference was crowded with plenty of attendees, emphasizing the importance of search in building a successful online retail presence.

The Facebook booth got a lot of attention at SES, but it was there to pitch its advertising service. It uses all that information you share with it to offer advertisers an extremely targeted way to reach its users. CEO Mark Zuckerberg said 2009 was the year to get serious, according to one of the Facebookers, and I'd expect to see more ads on Facebook based on the attendees' level of interest. Interested? You can check out Facebook's advertising program on this page.

Google was previewing its new AdWords interface, and Searchapalooza showcased some innovative search engines. Here's a link to a blog post with my initial thoughts about the conference at the end of day one. And here's a link to a roundup of the podcast interviews I conducted at the show.

The real buzzword of the conference was Twitter, the real-time social networking site that has seen a meteoric rise in users over past several months. Marketing evangelist Guy Kawasaki set the tone in his keynote address, saying, "Nobodies are the new somebodies," and calling the Twitter phenomenon the Democratization of Power - "No matter who you are, you get 140 characters."

It's a numbers game, he said, and he encouraged Twitter users to get as many followers as possible.

Guy was signing copies of his book, "Reality Check: The Irreverent Guide to Outsmarting, Outmanaging, and Outmarketing Your Competition," and he agreed to let me give away a copy to an AuctionBytes reader. Guy's blog is very popular because he's written some excellent essays for technology startups and entrepreneurs, and the book includes some of these gems.

Depression Glass From A To Z, Part III

Lorain
In the 1950’s, the footed sherbet with an open lace edge was produced in milk glass and avocado for use as a florist bowl - colors never made during the depression. These were probably made by anchor hocking instead of indiana - who produced lorain originally - as some have been found with hocking’s paper labels.

Madrid
In 1976, federal reissued this pattern for the bicentennial under the name “recollection”. Pieces were made in amber, but marked with a 76 in the design to distinguish old from new. Indiana glass bought the molds when federal closed, removed the 76 and made crystal. Since then, pieces have been made in blue, pink and a light ‘coke bottle green-blue’ color. The new blue is brighter than the original color, the new pink is too light. Many pieces have been made, some by combining two old items into a new one: the candlestick on a 10 inch plate became the pedestal cake stand; a tumbler on the candlestick base is sold as a hurricane lamp/vase, and the butter dish on the candlestick makes the footed candy dish. Reproductions of old pieces tend to be too heavy, the wrong color and sloppily molded. Study your depression glass encyclopedia so you know what’s original and what’s not.

Manhattan
Similar to manhattan, anchor hocking produced ‘park avenue’ from 1987-93 and then again in the late 1990’s in crystal and light ’sapphire blue.’ light blue was never made, and shapes were changed so as to maintain the integrity of the original crystal pieces. If you find something that’s not listed in the depression glass encyclopedias, it’s part of the park avenue line not manhattan.

Mayfair (open rose)
Cookie jars, shot glasses, small juice pitchers and salt/pepper shakers have been reproduced in pink (more orange than the original, green (both too dark and the wrong shade), cobalt, amethyst, red, amberina, and pink slag. The pattern is very weak on all items; pitcher and cookie bottoms lack the circular mold mark on the bottom, the shots have too much glass in the bottom.

Miss America
Reproduced in pink, green( wrong shade) red amberina, cobalt, crystal and ice blue as follows: repro flat tumblers have 2 mold seams instead of 4. Repro pitchers are missing the ice lip and the ‘hump’ in the top edge that old pitchers have by the handle to help grasp when pouring. New shakers are 3 1/4 inch tall and have too much glass on the inside - old are 3 3/8 inch tall and fill all the way to the bottom with salt. New butter dishes have a lump of glass sticking out (convex) under the knob; old are concave (curved in). To be continued.

SPI's Ares Magazines and Games

SPI's ARES Magazine

Ares was a science fiction wargame magazine published by Simulations Publications, Inc. (SPI), and then TSR, Inc., between 1980 and 1984. In addition to the articles, each issue contained a wargame, complete with a foldout stiff paper map, a set of cardboard counters, and the rules.

There were a total of seventeen issues printed, plus two special issues. The SPI company published the first eleven bimonthly issues (and had prepared a twelfth) before financial difficulties led to the company being bought out by TSR in 1982. A further six issues, published quarterly, were put out by TSR and then publication of the magazine was ceased. However, the Ares legacy lived on for another couple of years; a large new section called the Ares Section was added to Dragon Magazine starting with issue #84 (April 1984) and was treated as almost a magazine within a magazine. This special section provided support for science fantasy and superhero roleplaying games such as Gamma World, Marvel Super Heroes and Star Frontiers. The Ares Section ran through Dragon issue #111 (July 1986) after which it too was discontinued.

Wedgwood Bankruptcy

Wedgwood Bankruptcy Udate
April 1, 2009
WATERFORD WEDGWOOD ASSETS SOLDMost Waterford Wedgwood assets have been bought out of receivership by KPS Capital Partners of New York. They are not buying the Irish production facilities, so jobs will be lost. Some manufacturing will be transferred to Indonesia, Germany, and Slovakia. But this does mean production of the famous brands will continue. And higher-end Wedgwood products will still be made in England.

Old Ed

It happened every Friday evening, almost without fail, when the sun
resembled a giant orange and was starting to dip into the blue ocean.

Old Ed came strolling along the beach to his favorite pier. Clutched
in his bony hand was a bucket of shrimp. Ed walks out to the end of
the pier, where it seems he almost has the world to himself. The
glow of the sun is a golden bronze now.

Everybody's gone, except for a few joggers on the beach. Standing
out on the end of the pier, Ed is alone with his thoughts....and his
bucket of shrimp.

Before long, however, he is no longer alone. Up in the sky a
thousand white dots come screeching and squawking, winging their way
toward that lanky frame standing there on the end of the pier.

Before long, dozens of seagulls have enveloped him, their wings
fluttering and flapping wildly. Ed stands there tossing shrimp to
the hungry birds. As he does, if you listen closely, you can hear
him say with a smile, 'Thank you. Thank you.'
In a few short minutes the bucket is empty. But Ed doesn't leave.

He stands there lost in thought, as though transported to another
time and place. Invariably, one of the gulls lands on his
sea-bleached, weather-beaten hat - an old military hat he's been
wearing for years.

When he finally turns around and begins to walk back toward the
beach, a few of the birds hop along the pier with him until he gets
to the stairs, and then they, too, fly away. And old Ed quietly
makes his way down to the end of the beach and on home.

If you were sitting there on the pier with your fishing line in the
water, Ed might seem like 'a funny old duck,' as my dad used to say.
Or, 'a guy that's a sandwich shy of a picnic,' as my kids might say.
To onlookers, he's just another old codger, lost in his own weird
world, feeding the seagulls with a bucket full of shrimp.

To the onlooker, rituals can look either very strange or very empty.
They can seem altogether unimportant ...maybe even a lot of nonsense.

Old folks often do strange things, at least in the eyes of Boomers
and Busters.

Most of them would probably write Old Ed off, down there in Florida.
That's too bad. They'd do well to know him better.

His full name: Eddie Rickenbacker. He was a famous hero back in
World War II. On one of his flying missions across the Pacific, he
and his seven-member crew went down. Miraculously, all of the men
survived, crawled out of their plane, and climbed into a life raft.

Captain Rickenbacker and his crew floated for days on the rough
waters of the Pacific. They fought the sun. They fought sharks. Most
of all, they fought hunger. By the eighth day their rations ran out.
No food. No water. They were hundreds of miles from land and no one
knew where they were.

They needed a miracle. That afternoon they had a simple devotional
service and prayed for a miracle. They tried to nap. Eddie leaned
back and pulled his military cap over his nose. Time dragged. All he
could hear was the slap of the waves against the raft.

Suddenly, Eddie felt something land on the top of his cap. It was a
seagull!

Old Ed would later describe how he sat perfectly still, planning his
next move. With a flash of his hand and a squawk from the gull, he
managed to grab it and wring its neck. He tore the feathers off, and
he and his starving crew made a meal - a very slight meal for eight
men - of it. Then they used the intestines for bait. With it, they
caught fish, which gave them food and more bait......and the cycle
continued. With that simple survival technique, they were able to
endure the rigors of the sea until they were found and rescued.
(after 24 days at sea...)

Eddie Rickenbacker lived many years beyond that ordeal, but he never
forgot the sacrifice of that first lifesaving seagull. And he never
stopped saying, 'Thank you.' That's why almost every Friday night he
would walk to the end of the pier with a bucket full of shrimp and a
heart full of gratitude.

Reference: (Max Lucado, In The Eye of the Storm, pp.221, 225-226)

PS: Eddie was also an Ace in WW I and started Eastern Airlines.

* * * * * * * ** * * * *

Rickenbacker was a pilot during WW I who became an ace and was presented with The Medal of Honor. He went on to be a race car driver, an aviation consultant, and airline executive. He brought together two existing airlines to become Eastern airlines that went on to become a major presence in commercial aviation.

Depression Glass From A To Z, Part II

Floral Poinsettia
These shakers can be found in colbalt blue, red and deep green, which are all reproductions as none of those colors were made. The pink however was made originally and the pink reproduction is very close to that original color.
The reproduction shakers will give you a continuous threading on the screw on top, while the older one will have a pair of threads that will end prior to the mold seams.

Additionally, you will find that the pattern is on top of the base on the new shakers and under the base on the old ones, so that you have to turn them over to see the base pattern.

Florentine 1
Shakers have been found in pink, red, and cobalt. The pattern is very badly done, red & cobalt are not original colors.

Florentine 2
Pitcher & tumbler sets in red, dark green, cobalt, and two different pinks have been made. None of these colors were originally made.

Iris & herringbone
The reproduction iris & herringbone, 6 inch, crystal, water tumblers, and the originals are both the exact same size. They both have the smooth rays on the foot. Although the repro’s ray edges may be just slightly sharper than on the originals, but it’s probably way too close for the novice collector to tell the difference. The herringbone pattern is one key. It’s not even near as clear, sharp and vivid as on the originals. But still close enough to fool even a good eye.
Now…just like on the 6 1/2 inch ice tea tumbler, one quick way to tell the difference is, flip your tumbler upside down. Can you see the “mold” line at all on the foot? On the originals, the “mold” line is “very” visible when you look at it from this perspective. However, with the reproduction tumbler, if you have a very good eye and or an magnifying glass, you might could see the “mold” line when looking at it from the bottom side. If you have to look that hard to see it, it’s probably a reproduction.

One other way to tell is, on the original 6 inch water tumbler, just like on the original 6 1/2 inch ice tea tumbler, there are (4) sides to each of these tumblers. Let me explain. There are (4) iris flower designs. The two opposite each other should be exactly the same identical design, matching each other perfectly. If there’s any difference at all, then it’s probably a reproduction.

You can’t tell the difference between the two by feeling the hole in the bottom of the tumbler foot. They both have the exact same type and style of hole in them both, with the exact same number of rays on the foot as well.

One sure fire way to tell if your 6 inch water tumbler is the “real deal” or not is, just to the right of the iris flower design, you have a very long stem, kind of thick one, coming from the bottom of the tumbler to the top edge of the flower on the right side of the flower, curving slightly to the left at the top as it ends. It has been crossed, or x ‘ed towards the top of the stem, with a partial stem. If you turn the tumbler to the exact opposite side it should match exactly. If it doesn’t and it’s only half x’ed, or not x’ed at all, it’s an reproduction. The opposing sides will not match this side, the pattern is different, but should match each other exactly perfectly as well. To be continued

This Is Why I Carry A Gun

A Recent Craig's List Ad

To the Guy Who Mugged Me Downtown (Downtown, Savannah)

Date: 2 009-01-06, 3:43AM EST

I was the white guy with the black Burrberry jacket that you demanded I hand over shortly after you pulled the knife on me and my girlfriend. You also asked for my girlfriend's purse and earrings. I hope you somehow come across this message. I'd like to apologize.

I didn't expect you to crap your pants when I drew my pistol after you took my jacket. Truth is, I was wearing the jacket for a reason that evening, and it wasn't that cold outside. You see, my girlfriend had just bought me that Kimber 1911 .45 ACP pistol for Christmas, and we had just picked up a shoulder holster for it that evening. Beautiful pistol, eh? It's a very intimidating weapon when pointed at your head, isn't it?

I know it probably wasn't a great deal of fun walking back to wherever you'd come from with that brown sludge flopping about in your pants. I'm sure it was even worse since you also ended up leaving your shoes, cellphone, and wallet with me. I couldn't have you calling up any of your buddies to come help you try to mug us again. I took the liberty of calling your mother, or "Momma" as you had her listed in your cell, and explaining to her your situation. I also bought myself some gas on your card. I gave your shoes to one of the homeless guys over by Vinnie Van Go Go's, along with all of the cash in your wallet, then I threw the wallet itself in a dumpster.

I called a bunch of phone sex numbers from your cell. They'll be on your bill in case you'd like to know which ones. Alltel recently shut down the line, and I've only had the phone for a little over a day now, so I don't know what's going on with that. I hope they haven't permanently cut off your service. I was about to make some threatening phone calls to the DA's office with it. Oh well.

So, about your pants. I know that I was a little rough on you when you did this whole attempted mugging thing, so I'd like to make it up to you. I'm sure you've already washed your pants, so I'd like to help you out. I'd like to reimburse you for the detergent you used on the pants. What brand did you use, and was it liquid or powder? I'd also like to apologize for not killing you and instead making you walk back home humiliated. I'm hoping that you'll reconsider your choice of path in life. Next time you might not be so lucky. If you read this message, email me and we'll do lunch and laundry. Peace!

Alex

Dig This!! Greenhouse Gas Guzzlers

Scientists have discovered that peridotite, a rock in the upper mantle of the earth's crust, actually consumes greenhouse gases. Peridotite is so hungry for greenhouse gas that some scientists are proposing that we pump carbon-dioxide emissions into the areas where the rock is abundant, such as in Oman, some Pacific Islands, Croatia, Greece and parts of the United States.

As reported in "The Economist", scientists believe that by drilling into the rock and fracturing it, they can increase the absorption rate. Oman alone may be capable of absoring 4 billion tons of carbon-dioxide each year--a substantial portion of the 30 billion tons annually produced from the burning of fossil fuels.

Peridotite is named for the gemstone peridot, a glassy green gem mined in Asia and Arizona (Peridot Cove). Some peridotite is mined for ornamental stone.

Turquoise Necklaces

Turquoise Necklaces

Necklaces are one of the oldest forms of jewelry, rivaled in age and popularity only by the bracelet. With the workability and availability of turquoise, it is no surprise it was used frequently for necklace decoration. The turquoise necklace became a fashion success with the different styles and its excellent complexion compatibility. The necklace is one of the most artistically functional articles, complementing the wearer's face, body shape, height, and age. To suit many fashion requirements and tastes, the turquoise necklace has taken on many forms, all of which fit broadly into the pendant, beaded, or the squash blossom categories.

Turquoise Pendant Necklace
Taking advantage of the relative softness of turquoise, ancient peoples easily fashioned it into pendants. The inlaid turquoise pendant necklace style became more common and popular as people became more versed in the metalworking trade. The inlay process allows for greater creative reign with turquoise pendant necklace designs, providing a setting for individual stones and detailed stone mosaics. Whether inlaid or stone, turquoise pendants harmonize with leather cord, leather strips, and chain. The pendant throughout history has been a very popular type of turquoise necklace. As attractive and well-crafted as a pendant necklace may be, its true beauty and character shines while being worn. Those with youthful necklines should wear smaller pendants to subtly show off their smooth skin; while larger pendants should be worn, when desired, as a featured fashion item.

Turquoise Beaded Necklace
The soft nature of turquoise allows it to be cut into many sizes and shapes, from nugget, to chip, to heishi, which opens up myriad and beautiful turquoise necklace designs. Because there are so many turquoise-compatible gemstones, wood, and metal beads, the only limitations are the imagination and skill of the designer. They are available in various lengths and are available in single and multi-strand versions. As fashion trends steer towards chunky turquoise necklaces, large turquoise nugget necklaces are becoming more popular. Though, it is important to remember, the larger the stone, the less real it can look. If the chunky look is not for you, there are more subtle designs; graduated chip, pebble, and heishi offer a more simple and still elegant look.

Turquoise Squash Blossom Necklace
A relative newcomer to the turquoise necklace scene, the squash blossom necklace was popularized in the mid-19th century by Navajo and Zuni silversmiths. Since then it has become synonymous with American Indian art and jewelry. No Indian jewelry collection can be complete without a squash blossom necklace. It features a crescent shaped pendant called a "naja", which is "crescent" in Navajo, and beads resembling a squash or pomegranate blossom. The squash blossom is famous for its bold features - while this may deter some, it should be noted there are many versions of the necklace with more subtle and streamlined features.
