Identifying Vintage Cut Crystal

How to Identify Vintage Cut Crystal
by eHow Hobbies, Games & Toys Editor

Introduction
Cut crystal has been a favorite heirloom to pass down to generations for hundreds of years. Many manufacturers over the years have created some gorgeous designs. You'll find vintage cut crystal in the form of wine and water glasses, decanters, bowls, plates and other fine cut crystal items.

Step One, Look for a manufacturer's signature on the item when you try to identify vintage cut crystal. The name of the manufacturer is usually acid-etched on the bottom of the piece. For instance, the name "Waterford" (an Irish company that leads in cut crystal creation, especially for the bridal market) might appear on the bottom of a wine glass or water goblet. But not all vintage cut crystal can be identified this way. Not all name brand pieces were marked by the manufacturer and some patterns are so old that they can't be traced back to a company.

Step Two, Identify vintage cut crystal by examining the pattern. As the name implies, cut crystal has shapes, designs, patterns and prisms cut into the glass. Distinctive elegant patterns are often seen in Victorian era pieces. Beautifully enameled colors that trim the cut crystal designs are often found also, especially in the Victorian.

Step Three, Try the age-old test of fine crystal collectors in the United States and abroad when you want to identify vintage cut crystal. Flick the tip of your finger against the edge of a cut crystal glass. It should ring with an echoing musical tone created by vibration.

Step Four, Taste wine from a wine glass that you think is vintage cut crystal. Whether vintage, or recently manufactured, many wine experts insist that fine cut crystal makes the wine zip with a clearer, crisper taste. Wine tasters have been able to tell the difference in imitation cut glass and fine cut crystal simply by comparing the taste of wine from each glass. Experts say that when you examine a fine cut crystal glass under a microscope, you can see that the glass has a coarse, uneven surface. This texture and surface is what magnifies the taste of the wine.

"The duty imposed upon [the president] to take care, that the laws be faithfully executed, follows out the strong injunctions of his oath of office, that he will 'preserve, protect, and defend the constitution.' The great object of the executive department is to accomplish this purpose; and without it, be the form of government whatever it may, it will be utterly worthless for offence, or defence; for the redress of grievances, or the protection of rights; for the happiness, or good order, or safety of the people." --Justice Joseph Story

A Conversation Between GOD & St. Francis

A conversation between GOD and St. Francis about Suburbanites

GOD: St. Francis, you know all about gardens and nature. What in the World is going on down there in the USA? What happened to the dandelions, violets, thistle and stuff I started eons ago? I had a perfect, no-maintenance garden plan. Those plants grow in any type of soil, withstand drought and multiply with abandon. The nectar from the long lasting blossoms attracts butterflies, honeybees and flocks of songbirds. I expected to see a vast garden of colors by now. But all I see are these green rectangles.

ST. FRANCIS: It's the tribes that settled there, Lord. The Suburbanites. They started calling your flowers weeds and went to great lengths to kill them and replace them with grass.

GOD: Grass? But it's so boring. It's not colorful. It doesn't attract butterflies, birds and bees, only grubs and sod worms. It's temperamental with temperatures. Do these Suburbanites really want all that grass growing there?

ST. FRANCIS: Apparently so, Lord. They go to great pains to grow it and keep it green. They begin each spring by fertilizing grass and poisoning any other plant that crops up in the lawn.

GOD: The spring rains and warm weather probably make grass grow really fast. That must make the Suburbanites happy.

ST. FRANCIS: Apparently not, Lord. As soon as it grows a little, they cut it, sometimes twice a week.

GOD: They cut it? Do they then bale it like hay?

ST. FRANCIS: Not exactly Lord. Most of them rake it up and put it in bags.

GOD: They bag it? Why? Is it a cash crop? Do they sell it?

ST. FRANCIS: No, sir -- just the opposite. They pay to throw it away.

GOD: Now, let me get this straight. They fertilize grass so it will grow. And when it does grow, they cut it off and pay to throw it away?

ST. FRANCIS: Yes, sir.

GOD: These Suburbanites must be relieved in the summer when we cut back On the rain and turn up the heat. That surely slows the growth and saves Them a lot of work.

ST. FRANCIS: You aren't going to believe this, Lord. When the grass stops growing so fast, they drag out hoses and pay more money to water it so they can continue to mow it and pay to get rid of it.

GOD: What nonsense. At least they kept some of the trees. That was a Sheer stoke of genius, if I do say so myself. The trees grow leaves in the spring to provide beauty and shade in the summer. In the autumn they fall to the ground and form a natural blanket to keep moisture in the soil and protect the trees and bushes. Plus, as they rot, the leaves form compost to enhance the soil. It's a natural circle of life.

ST. FRANCIS: You'd better sit down, Lord. The Suburbanites have drawn a new circle. As soon as the leaves fall, they rake them into great piles and pay to have them hauled away.

GOD: No. What do they do to protect the shrub and tree roots in the Winter and to keep the soil moist and loose?

ST. FRANCIS: After throwing away the leaves, they go out and buy Something which they call mulch. They haul it home and spread it around in place of the leaves.

GOD: And where do they get this mulch?

ST. FRANCIS: They cut down trees and grind them up to make the mulch.

GOD: Enough! I don't want to think about this anymore. St. Catherine, you're in charge of the arts. What movie have you scheduled for us tonight?

ST. CATHERINE: Dumb and Dumber, Lord. It's a real stupid movie about.............

GOD: Never mind, I think I just heard the whole story from St. Francis.

Joke of the Day: Gun Control
Barack Obama, at a recent rural elementary school assembly in East Texas, asked the audience for total quiet. Then, in the silence, he started to
slowly clap his hands once every few seconds, holding the audience in total silence.
Then he said into the microphone, 'Children, every time I clap my hands together,
a child in America dies from gun violence.'
Then, little Richard Earl, with a proud East Texas drawl, pierced the quiet and said: ''Well, dumbass, stop clapping!'

Counting The Craters Of Titan

Counting The Craters Of Titan

With so much "weather" on Titan finding craters is not easy.
by Anuradha K. Herath

Moffett Field CA (SPX) Apr 23, 2010

A new study in the journal Icarus provides the latest round-up of the number of impact craters found on Saturn's moon Titan.
Between 2004 and December 2007, Cassini had surveyed 22 percent of Titan's surface. Scientists analyzed images taken by the spacecraft's high-resolution Radar Mapper instrument, and found 49 impact craters.

"Impact craters are created on every planet because of asteroids, comets and other debris that collide with their surfaces," said Charles Wood, senior scientist at the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Az, and lead author of the study. "Analyzing impact craters is a standard technique to tell you the history of the world."

Gov Jan Brewer Signs SB1070

Gov Jan Brewer signs tough immigration bill, SB1070.

Gov. Brewer blames the Obama administration for leaving Arizona no choice but to get tough on immigration, the East Valley Tribune reports.

She tells a press conference at the state's National Guard headquarters, the newspaper reports, that it is not the job of state government to secure the border "but we have no other choice.''

"Those who have failed to protect us have shown only weakness and delay,'' she says, adding that top administration officials have "simply turned a blind eye to the issues that Arizona is being overrun by illegal immigration, terrorizing the citizens.''

"No matter the cost, no matter the sacrifice, we cannot shirk government's principle responsibilities to the citizens we serve to provide safety and security,'' she says.

eBay Traffic at 6-Yr Low for March Data

eBay Traffic at 6-Year Low for March Data
By Ina Steiner
AuctionBytes.com
April 15, 2010

eBay's traffic for the month of March was at a 6-year low compared to previous March numbers. Data provided by Nielsen show that eBay received 49.6 million unique visitors in March 2010, down over 18% from 61 million in March 2007, the peak year for March data.

eBay CEO John Donahoe initiated a 3-year plan to turnaround the marketplaces business after taking the helm in 2008. But unless sales defy traffic trends, he may have a tough time convincing shareholders that the plan is working when he faces them at the company's annual meeting at the end of the month.

Paisley Prints Described

Paisley print is an easily recognized pattern that resembles a crooked tear drop or half of a yin-yang. A very popular print on all sorts of clothing and fashion accessories during the 1960s, paisley print is commonly found today on men’s ties and handkerchiefs. It has also recently resurfaced on women’s skirts and handbags. Though paisley print became popular when it appeared in the shops of London's Carnaby Street during the mod fashion frenzy, its origin can be traced back to India.

Though the recognizable paisley print pattern was originally crafted by Indian artisans, it was brought to Scotland in the early 19th century, where it received its name. Paisley print was named after the Scottish town of Paisley, where printed cotton and wool fabrics were heavily manufactured. Paisley print saw its first acclaimed popularity in the 1960s. Clothes with paisley print were extremely fashionable, and in 1967, John Lennon had his Rolls Royce painted with a paisley print pattern. The trendy shops of Carnaby Street boasted skirts, tops, and men's shirts in paisley print.

Today, paisley print is very common on silk neckties for men, and some fashion designers regularly incorporate paisley print into their leather handbags. Handkerchiefs have long featured a paisley print pattern, most frequently seen in red or blue. In Los Angeles, these paisley print bandannas can signify gang affiliation, and in the Midwest, they are still worn by farmers and ranchers alike to wipe away the sweat of a hard day’s work.

More recently, paisley print experienced a revival of sorts in a more modern version of the paisley print skirt. A trendy look for 2004, a paisley print skirt or top paired with a solid color was popular as both office wear and casual evening wear. Paisley print had been in existence for hundreds of years before it surfaced as a recognizable fashion print, and it is likely that it will continue to be seen in textiles and even decorative home designs for many years to come.

Division of Emergency Management Working With Amateur Radio Group Places Critical Weather Station into Operation

The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office Division of Emergency Management has partnered with the Cherokee Amateur Radio Emergency Service to install a real-time weather station atop Pine Log Mountain in northwestern Cherokee County. The Davis 6152 weather station provides near real-time wind direction and speed, temperature, humidity, dew point and pressure through an interface with amateur radio to the Citizens Weather Observation Program (CWOP). “This weather station will provide vital real-time weather information to the Emergency Operations Center that will be used during severe weather situations, winter storms, and during dangerous fire weather situations” said Robby Westbrook, Director of the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office Division of Emergency Management.

The weather station was purchased through a grant provided by the Georgia
Emergency Management Agency and was
installed atop Pine Log Mountain by the dedicated members of the Cherokee Amateur Radio Emergency Service at no cost to the county. The data provided by the weather station is available to the public by using the following link: Weather.

The Cherokee Amateur Radio Emergency Service provides a wide range of functions within the county emergency management program including storm spotting and communications between field units, the Emergency Operations Center and other critical facilities. Most importantly they provide vital backup for the Public Safety Radio System in the event of a catastrophic failure.

The Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) consists of licensed amateurs who have voluntarily registered their qualifications and equipment for communications duty in public service when disaster strikes. The only qualification, other than possession of an amateur radio license, is a sincere desire to serve. Because ARES is an amateur service, only amateurs are eligible for membership. The possession of emergency-powered equipment is desirable, but is not a requirement for membership.
For more information on the Cherokee Amateur Radio Emergency Service visit our web site at: CARS.

Timesharing in Tennessee

This Week we are high-lighting the Bent Creek Golf Village Timeshare Resort, a Premier Interval International exchange resort and a Gold Crown RCI exchange resort.

Bent Creek Golf Village's 18-hole course, designed by Gary Player, winds its way through the foothills of the Smoky Mountains, and offers a challenge to both avid and occasional golfers. You also can enjoy fishing available near Bent Creek Golf Village, or simply unwind in your spacious accommodations, one or two bedroom units with fireplace and full kitchen. Some units have individual hot tubs on the screened-in porch, in addition to whirlpool tubs in the master bath.

Bent Creek is located North of Gatlinburg in the Smokey Mountains, away from the "glitz" of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge; but close driving distance to all of the attractions in both of these vacation locations. Whether you prefer exploring or relaxing, Bent Creek is the perfect year-round getaway.

We have stayed at Bent Creek in the past and were very pleased with the location. The accommodations were excellent and well maintained.

SAVING LEADS TO TREASURES

Unexpected treasures found among items grandma saved are not uncommon. Think before you clean out old paper ephemera. In May, Swan Galleries is auctioning 22 posters made in the 1930s by WPA artists to encourage children to read books. The modernist posters are estimated to bring about $7,800 as a group. (They are being sold in 5 lots.) How lucky no one dumped them when cleaning a public library attic.
