Hazel-Atlas Glass Company

The Hazel-Atlas Glass Company was a large producer of machine-molded glass containers headquartered in Wheeling, West Virginia. It was founded in 1902 in Washington, Pennsylvania,as the merger of four companies:

Hazel Glass and Metals Company (started in 1887)
Atlas Glass Company (started 1896)
Wheeling Metal Plant
Republic Glass Company

By the 1930’s, Hazel-Atlas had fifteen plants (plants included those in Clarksburg, WV; Zanesville, OH; Ada, OK; Montgomery, AL; Oakland, CA; Pomona, CA and other locations) and was the largest glass manufacturer in the world. Hazel-Atlas manufactured tremendous quantities of "depression" pressed glassware in a wide variety of patterns throughout the 1920s, '30s and '40s. They also produced many of the white milkglass "inserts" used inside zinc fruit jar lids, as well as many types of milkglass cold cream jars and salve containers.

Hazel-Atlas was also an important maker of a very large variety of bottles and jars for the commercial packaging industry. "Atlas" was the name brand of their most popular line of fruit jars for home canning. Hazel-Atlas, at that time the third largest producer of glass containers in the U.S.,became a subsidiary of the Continental Can Company in 1957. The acquisition was challenged under the Clayton Antitrust Act in a case that was eventually decided by the U.S. Supreme Court in United States v. Continental Can Co..

Hazel-Atlas continued to make containers, glassware and tableware into the 1960s. In 1964, 10 of the 12 H-A plants in operation were sold to Brockway Glass Company, and it is unclear if the remaining two plants used the H-A trademark after that year.

Hazel-Atlas produced dozens of different patterns, with unique names. The Hazel-Atlas mark, usually placed on the back of the product, is an "A" nestled underneath an "H". The mark was reportedly first used in 1923, according to trademark office records quoted by Peterson (400 Trademarks on Glass).

Reading AuctionBytes: From the Editor

eBay rolled out the Top Rated Seller program last week, introduced a new seller dashboard, and made changes to its search algorithm. Not surprisingly, there is a lot of reaction from sellers, including two main areas of concern: Why didn't I qualify for TRS? And, why did my standings in search results drop? You can read all about the changes in today's issue, including links to our recent coverage of the eBay fall release.

Two weeks ago I caught up with Woot.com founder Matt Rutledge at the Shop.org conference in Las Vegas. Woot.com is the king of the "Daily Deal" (you can read my 2004 interview with Matt in this AuctionBytes article). Matt said he has a new project still under wraps, deals.woot.com, that will be of interest to eBay and online powersellers, and he promised to share more details when it got closer to launching.

Matt was part of a panel discussion at Shop.org called "Reinventing Online Retail: Radical Business Models That Are Paying Off Today" with Susan Lyne of Gilt Groupe (link). While retailers at the Summit were talking a lot about social networking and mobile commerce, interest in the secondary market was a strong undercurrent.

I also spent some time at the show talking with Ztail founders Bill Hudak and Jordan Kobert, who are putting a unique spin on trade-in programs that are all the rage with retailers, especially those selling consumer electronics. In an interview, Bill shared his thoughts on how such secondary-market programs will affect both retailers and online sellers - the podcast will be available soon on Ecommerce Industry SoundBytes, where you can also find an interview with Craig Gillan, Director of Ecommerce at clothing retailer Charlotte Russe, and with ecommerce expert Jochen Krisch who writes the ExcitingEcommerce.com blog from Germany.

One of the keynote speakers at the conference was eBay CEO John Donahoe, whose main message to attendees was to reassure them that "eBay is not a retailer."

Search Ranking Factors Shows How Little SEO Has Changed

Search Ranking Factors Shows How Little SEO Has Changed
Aug 24, 2009 at 1:37pm ET by Matt McGee

72 search engine optimizers from around the world have contributed to SEOmoz’s latest Search Engine Ranking Factors report, a study that offers valuable insight into how SEO works in 2009 … but also shows how little it’s changed in recent years. (Disclaimer: I’m one of the 72 contributors.) You can read the survey here, Surveyand there are also some interesting comments on SEOmoz’s blog post.

Participating SEOs completed a lengthy survey earlier this year that involved ranking possible factors that Google uses when ranking sites. The survey also included a variety of questions about current SEO trends and topics.

According to this year’s survey, the top five ranking factors are:

1.Anchor Text from External Links
2.Keyword Use in Title Tag
3.Raw Link Popularity
4.Diversity of Linking Domains
5.Keyword Use in Root Domain

Those first three factors are unchanged from the 2007 version of this survey, although the order is slightly different. Two years ago, the top five were:

1.Keyword Use in Title Tag
2.Global Link Popularity of Site (”Raw Link Popularity” above)
3.Anchor Text of Inbound Links (”Anchor Text from External Links” above)
4.Link Popularity within the Site’s Internal Link Structure
5.Age of Site

It looks like SEOmoz changed the structure of this year’s survey a bit. Negative ranking factors are presented separately, and there’s a new chart of “Overall Ranking Algorithm” elements. In fact, the fifth factor on the 2007 list, “Age of Site,” is now essentially the same as (or at least very similar to) the number one piece of the Overall Ranking Algorithm, “Trust/Authority of the Host Domain.”

When it comes to the big picture of SEO, the primary factors really haven’t changed much over the years. But what separates “good” SEO from “great” SEO is often in the details. That’s where you’ll find the true value of the SEO factors survey — in learning the little things that competitors may have overlooked.
