Marilyn Monroe’s Chest X-Ray Sells at Auction, From Kovel's Komments

Marilyn Monroe’s Chest X-Ray Sells at Auction

It is illegal to auction body parts, shrunken heads, and human skulls, but three medical x-rays of Marilyn Monroe’s chest were sold as collectibles last week. The 1954 x-rays, estimated at $800-$1,000, sold for $45,000 at a Las Vegas auction run by Julien’s Auctions of West Hollywood, California. A radiology resident at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Hollywood “obtained” the X-rays in the 1950s and later used them when he taught medical school classes. Marilyn was said to have known about their classroom use and didn’t mind. But why would anyone want to pay tens of thousands of dollars for them? Would you?

Thomas Jefferson's Reset Button

EDITORIAL: Thomas Jefferson's reset button

Americans have a duty to resist tyrannical government
By THE WASHINGTON TIMES 6:34 p.m., Thursday, July 1, 2010

These days, most commentary on the Declaration of Independence focuses on the implications of the passage that "all men are created equal [and] that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights." Dwelling on that passage might surprise Thomas Jefferson, who thought it was self-evident. The argument that flowed from his premises is more important, namely that governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed, and when the relationship shifts to the point where government becomes a threat to the lives, liberties and pursuit of happiness of the people, it is government - not the people - that must change.

A government becomes corrupt when it abuses the power derived from the people by doing things that harm the polity and when it acts primarily as a servant of its own interests. This definition of illegitimate government has a history going back at least to Aristotle, though the 17th-century philosopher John Locke, in his "Two Treatises of Government," gave it a form that would have been more familiar to American colonists. Beyond a certain point, when the actions of government become intolerable, the people have not only a right but a duty to reclaim their inalienable sovereignty and start over. This must be done, as Jefferson said, to "provide new Guards for their future security."

The list of grievances in the Declaration - the part people often skip over - is critical to the argument because those grievances serve as evidence to make the case that British government had by its actions sundered the fundamental relationship between Parliament and the American colonists. Such a catalog of "abuses and usurpations" today might include: imposing confiscatory levels of overall taxation; using budget authority to transfer billions of taxpayer dollars to government insiders and pet causes; running up the national debt to a point where it is nearly equal to the nation's total productive output; saddling current and future generations with ruinous debt to pay for pet programs that benefit the few at the expense of the many; failing to secure the nation's borders from a flood of illegal immigrants and standing in the way of states and localities seeking to take up this fundamental duty, which the national government has chosen to ignore; and a variety of other issues ranging from a sketchy national census to crumbling national security.

The prime difference between the situation in 2010 and that of 1776 is that the people now can provide oversight through the election process. The ballot is the corrective mechanism that was unavailable to the Founders. Today's dire situation in Washington has approached the intolerable because too few have gone to the polls to defend their rights against the predatory, permanent governing class in Congress. An electorate that fails to defend its rights deserves what it gets. Rights guarantee nothing unless they are used, and if they are not exercised, they tend to be exorcised.

After independence, Jefferson explained that the Declaration was "an expression of the American mind" intended to "give to that expression the proper tone and spirit called for by the occasion." The result is a timeless document the spirit of which is as applicable today as it was then. The people have the means at their disposal to take back our country and the government from the disconnected oligarchy in Washington. However, this only works if Americans actually step up. To paraphrase Benjamin Franklin, the country will only be a republic if the people are strong enough to keep it.

And no man has the power

For the clock may soon be still"

Rubik's Cube

The Rubik's Cube is a 3-D mechanical puzzle invented in 1974by Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture Ernő Rubik. Originally called the "Magic Cube", the puzzle was licensed by Rubik to be sold by Ideal Toys in 1980and won the German Game of the Year special award for Best Puzzle that year. As of January 2009, 350 million cubes have sold worldwide making it the world's top-selling puzzle game. It is widely considered to be the world's best-selling toy.

In a classic Rubik's Cube, each of the six faces is covered by 9 stickers, among six solid colours (traditionally white, red, blue, orange, green, and yellow). A pivot mechanism enables each face to turn independently, thus mixing up the colours. For the puzzle to be solved, each face must be a solid colour. Similar puzzles have now been produced with various numbers of stickers, not all of them by Rubik. The original 3×3×3 version celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2005.

Our Independence (From Let Freedom Ring USA By Colin Hanna)

Two hundred thirty-four years ago we began an experiment that would change the trajectory of human history beyond anyone's imagination at the time.

We hold these truths to be self-evident:
People stood up. They claimed for the first time that the rights despots and monarchs had been self-righteously dolling out for centuries were not theirs to give.

that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights:
They stood up and proclaimed that their rights we're bestowed onto them by God almighty and no one else.

that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness:

When their voices were ignored, they proclaimed louder. They protested. They rallied. They fought. They Won.

And in their victory they created a document, so brilliant and elegant, that it has led a fledgling nation to grow into a beacon of liberty, freedom and prosperity like nothing known before it.

Two hundred thirty-four years later we are still indebted to those brave souls.

We live in a place of unparalleled freedom. A country where an individual's opportunity is limited by nothing but their dreams and willingness to work toward them. We speak freely, we practice our faith as we see fit, we protect ourselves and our families all through the freedoms fought for over two centuries ago.

We are free because of their sacrifice. And just as importantly, we are free because of every single brave man and women who has served our nation since as a member of our armed forces. We can not--we must not--ever forget the incredible sacrifice made to preserve and protect this dream, this experiment, this promise that is America.

This independence day, I would ask that you consider a contribution--no matter how large or small--to one of many incredible organizations dedicated to improve the lives of our veterans and their loved ones.

All gave some, and some gave all.

"[T]he hour is fast approaching, on which the Honor and Success of this army, and the safety of our bleeding Country depend. Remember officers and Soldiers, that you are Freemen, fighting for the blessings of Liberty -- that slavery will be your portion, and that of your posterity, if you do not acquit yourselves like men." --George Washington, General Orders, 1776

The Best History Lesson

These are possibly the 5 best sentences you'll ever read:

1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.

2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.

3, The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.

4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.

5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work, because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

All About Wedgwood, Part IV, Author Unknown

Part IV of on ongoing article on the life and times of Josiah Wedgwood and his Wedgwood Factory.

Josiah Wedgwood, the elder, died January 3, 1795, and, though the works went on after his death, his personal supervision and inspiration could never be replaced. With his death the production of old Wedgwood, as the connoisseur knows it, ceased.

Now as to the Wedgwood wares. In 1754 Wedgwood invented a green glaze that enjoyed some popularity, but the improved cream-colored ware was the earliest that is still extant in any considerable quantity. This ware was light and durable, similar to Leeds ware in appearance, but superior to it in biscuit, glaze, color, and form. Several tones and hues were employed, ranging from pale cream to deep straw, saffron, and sulphur yellow. It is always clear and even in tone, forming a good background for decoration. At first it was plain; later it was decorated in various ways-colored lines, marbled in gold, or decorated with flower, fruit, vine, shell, or Etruscan borders in blue, red, green, black, and brown. Gilt appeared occasionally on pieces made from 1763 to 1765. The color was painted on by hand, at first merely on the surface and later burned in. At first the decorated pieces were rather too expensive, so that later the outlines were printed and the color filled in by hand, but the work was always careful and accurate.

In 1761 Wedgwood presented a breakfast set of this cream-colored ware to Oueen Charlotte, and was made Potter to her Majesty in consequence. This increased the popularity of the ware materially, and it became known as queen's-ware, the name commonly given to it by collectors today.

As early as 1761 Wedgwood was making excellent tea- and dinner sets in queen's-ware that sold as cheaply as £4 for 146 pieces at wholesale. Many of his decorated services were much more costly, however. Sasketwork dishes were common, and vases of good form with Etruscan borders. The pierced and embossed work was always done with minute perfection, which distinguishes it from Leeds and other wares.

Wedgwood invented many new dishes for his table services, and made also flower-pots, bulb-pots, and "bough pots." Serpent, goat's head, satyr, and dolphin handles and festoons are noteworthy features. While the queen's-ware cannot compare with basalt and jasper for artistic beauty, there is a charm about the look and the "feel" of it that endears it to the hearts of Wedgwood enthusiasts. To be Continued.

The Reader's Digest Condensed Books

The Reader's Digest Condensed Books were a series of hardcover anthology collections, published by Reader's Digest and distributed via direct mail. Each volume contained several current best-selling novels (or, occasionally, nonfiction books) edited down (or "condensed") to accommodate the anthology format. Originally published four times a year, the books gradually increased to a bi-monthly schedule by the early 1990s.

The series ran for over 47 years, before being reintroduced under the name Reader's Digest Select Editions. The concept became sufficiently familiar to the American public that the phrase "Just give me the Reader's Digest Condensed version" (or simply "...the Reader's Digest version") entered the lexicon as a way to ask someone to use less detail and be more focused when telling an anecdote or explaining a point.

The Reader's Digest Select Editions are a series of hardcover fiction anthology books, published bi-monthly and available by subscription, from Reader's Digest. Each volume consists of four to five current bestselling novels, selected by Digest editors, and carefully edited (or "condensed") to shorter form to accommodate the anthology format.

This series is the renamed version of the long-running anthology series Reader's Digest Condensed Books.

This Week Marks the 60th Anniversary of the Start of The Korean War

Sixty years ago this week, North Korean troops stormed across the 38th parallel into South Korea, launching a three-year conflict that culminated in an armistice in 1953, but never officially ended.

The North Koreans launched a massive, coordinated air-land invasion in the early-morning hours of June 25, 1950, with more than 230,000 troops, fighter jets, attack bombers, reconnaissance aircraft, tanks and artillery.

NRA Director: Real Reason Behind Disclose Act

Democrats’ exclusion of the National Rifle Association from the Disclose Act reining in political spending by corporations shows that the bill is in fact a scheme to aid Democrats in the midterm elections, according to a member of the NRA’s board of directors.

The “cynical” decision by House Democrats “to exempt the NRA from the latest campaign finance regulatory scheme is itself a public disclosure,” board member Cleta Mitchell, a partner in the law firm Foley & Lardner specializing in campaign finance law, wrote in an opinion piece for the Washington Post.

“It reveals the true purpose of the perversely named Disclose Act — namely, to silence congressional critics in the 2010 elections.”

The Disclose Act is a response to a Supreme Court decision that came down in January allowing corporations to sponsor election-related ads. The bill would require corporations, unions and nonprofit groups to disclose their top five donors if they participate in political activity, and to agree to other disclosures related to expenditures before elections. .....

Wedgwood Jewelry

Wedgwood jewelry

Various articles of personal adornment decorated with plaques of ceramic ware made by Josiah Wedgwood & Sons Ltd. Such articles (including finger rings, medallions, brooches, pendants, buckles, clasps, earrings) were often made by Josiah Wedgwood (1730-95) of jasper or black basalted earthenware, sometimes as a cameo or intaglio set in a metal mount.

The mounts were of gold, silver or marcasite, or of cut steel frequently made by Matthew Boulton of Birmingham, c. 1790.

Other articles which have been made of, or decorated with, Wedgwood jasper include beads, combs, chatelaines, and scent bottles. The ground of the jasper ware is of various colours, e.g. pale blue, lilac, sage-green, yellow, and black.

Josiah Wedgwood II made, c. 1812-22, some medallions of bone China that were mounted as brooches.
